At the Court's hearing the Judge will determine your status and possibly send you to a defensive driving course.
But remember that in some cases you are not eligible to go to traffic school.
These cases may vary in different states but the most common are:
you are charged with an alcohol or drug related charge(D.U.I.);you are charged with a two-point violation; you do not hold a class A, class B, or commercial class C license;you have not completed another traffic school within the last 18 months of receiving the current citation;you were driving more than 25 mph over the cited safe speed;the traffic offense must not have been a serious traffic offense such as reckless driving or leaving the scene of a collision;and if you fail to appear by your pay or appear date until you pay all fines, additional fees and civil assessments.
If you want to attend a defensive driving course than you have to request that the Court "orders" you to attend a traffic school. Such request may be made only in the county where you received your ticket.
You will still have to pay all fines and additional fees imposed by the Court, you will also have to pay for the traffic school yourself. All these costs are non-refundable.
Since you have been "ordered" to attend a traffic school, you will have a certain time period to attend and show proof of successful completion of the course to the Court. Once the Court receives proof of attendance, your case may be dismissed. In case of violation of the Court's order the traffic offense will be added to your DMV driving record, your driving points won't be reduced and you will be charged with a misdemeanor.
There are different types of Court Approved Traffic Schools. For people who learn best by hearing instead of seeing attending a classroom course is the best option. Also in the classroom you may ask an instructor in case of any difficulties or misunderstandings, update your knowledge of the traffic laws,
share you experience with other listeners.
Online traffic schools may be completed over the Internet. Defensive driving online courses are similar in content to traditional ones, but such kind of study may be more useful for people living distantly,
being short of time and skilled in Internet.
The length of the defensive driving online course curriculum is based on the requirements of the state
or the Court. Usually, the courses are from 4 to 8 hours in length. Online courses are close to standard
classroom courses, they may also have pop quizzes, security questions, page timers and final tests.
But there are some advantages in taking online courses:
you don't have to return to the state where you received the ticket and to attend classes there; you may complete the course on your own schedule;you can stop the course and continue it at a later time.
And while after finishing the classroom school you have to bring your confirmation papers to the Court personally or send them by mail, most of online traffic schools send your results directly to the Court saving your time and money.
The only problem with online traffic schools is that they are not permitted in many states. Before you start studying you should check the list of Court Approved Traffic Schools at the same Court which gave you the order.
