Creating Cover Letters That Interest Employers

When applying for a job, it is not at all unusual for a person to get so wrapped

up in making sure that their resume is perfect and that they are ready for the interview that they completely over look the value of strong cover letters. The end result is usually a great interview, a polished resume, and an introductory letter that looks like something penned by a high school freshman.

The economy is failing. This means that there can be hundreds of applicants for a single position Employers need a way to streamline the process. One of the best ways to do this is to read every applicants letter. If the employer likes the letter, they will move onto the the resume. If they do not like the letter, they forget about the applicant all together and move onto the next letter.

One of the dumber things you can do is submit a letter that looks less than professional. Very few employers will even glance at a cover letter that is written in glitter pen and on florescent paper. This one of those times when it is wise to conform to tradition. You want to make sure that your letter is neatly typed in a clear, easy to read format, and that it is printed on very clean paper. If the ink smudges, you will have to print the letter again.

Even though your letter is suppose to be professional, you also want your potential employer to feel like you have written the letter just for them, and not for the other ten jobs you are applying for. To give you letter a personal touch you need to avoid generic salutations and try to use the person's real name whenever it is is possible.

By the time your employer finishes reading your cover letter, they should have a pretty good sense of who you are, but you do not want to give anything away either. The letter should only be one page long. The best thing to do is touch on the highlights of your professional life. If the employer wants details they can read your resume. Make sure that you only include professional information in your letter, potential employers do not want to know about your personal life.

You can always tell if a novel is going to be good if it has a really great opening line, a line that makes you want to keep reading. That is what the first paragraph of your introductory letter should do. It should make the person reading the letter learn all about you.

The best way to do this is by telling how you feel that you will benefit the business. Make it a clear statement that is concise and informative. Capture their interest in the very beginning.

Upon completing your letter, read over it. You want to make sure that all of the information you have included is accurate and that it will not be contradicted by your resume. You also want to have a friend or family member read the letter to make sure that there are not any grammatical errors or typos that will give it a less than professional appearance, you will be amazed by how many mistakes your proofreader catches that you managed to miss. Once the letter is declared error free, it is ready to be turned in.
