Cultural attractions in Liverpool
These days, Liverpool has become synonymous with art and culture and has a whole
range of art galleries, museums and theatres to offer visitors to Liverpool's greatest and biggest tourist attractions.
It has also attracted a lot of interest in its sculptures around the city centre. If you book a room for a few nights at the Heywood House Hotel, based in the middle of the city, you will be in the ideal position to make the most of these attractions.
In fact, the Liverpool waterfront is now known as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cultural World Heritage Sites are historic monuments, or groups of buildings, which are of outstanding universal value to the international community.
The World Heritage site, which was awarded this status in 2004, stretches along the waterfront from Albert Dock, through The Pier Head and up to Stanley Dock.
It carries on up through the historic commercial districts and the RopeWalks area to the cultural quarter, which is dominated by the magnificent St. George's hall.
Visitors to the Heywood House Hotel in Liverpool might also be interested in Liverpool's maritime history.
Shipping has long been associated with Liverpool - especially the ill-fated voyages of The Titanic, Lusitania and the forgotten Empress. Of course, we have all heard about the famous ferries across the Mersey, and Liverpool even had links to the slave trade.
The city also has a number of fascinating museums, with many closely situated near each other in Albert Dock. This includes the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you can find out more about Liverpool's shipping history. It includes a tribute about the Titanic and the Lusitania.
Another musuem looks at the legacy of the slave trade, focusing in particular on Liverpool's role as a major slaving port between 1500 and 1865. Over 1.5 million Africans were taken to plantations in the Americas during this time.
Other museums include the World Museum Liverpool, The National Conservation Centre and the World of Glass.
Art has also been a bit theme for the city during 2010. You can visit the Walker Art Gallery, the national gallery of the North and the Tate Liverpool. These centres stage exhibitions of international quality and in the past have featured work from Picasso and Rembrandt.
If you search deep enough, you will find fascinating historic stories all around Liverpool. That is why it is worth making Heywood House Hotel the centre of it all. It is also an ideal venue for getting a way from it all, with its relaxing atmosphere and extremely comfortable rooms.
