Cut Down On Your Food Waste
A new report from Britain has found that more than 12 billion of consumable food and drink is throw away in the country each year.
The study by the Waste and Resources Action Program, or WRAP a group created by the British government to investigate waste and packaging found Britain's food waste amounts to an estimated 6.6 million tons per year.
You could help reduce the amount of waste you produce and save hundreds of pounds each year just by making a few small changes to the way you shop.
In the UK alone people throw away roughly a third of everything they buy and more than half this waste is still edible at the time of disposal.
How To Shop And Cut Down On Waste
Try to plan your meals for a few days ahead before going to shop. Check what you already have in your cupboards and fridge etc to see what you already have and to help avoid buying more of something you already have.
Take into consideration any left overs you may have from a meal, so if for example you are planning on having a roast chicken for your Sunday dinner plan to have a chicken curry or stir-fry the following day and you could also use the carcass to make a chicken stock which could be used for a soup.
1. Store Food Correctly
Storing food correctly will help prolong it's shelf life and cut down on wastage. Check out www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for some great advice on keeping food fresher for longer.
2. Have a Basics Storage Cupboard
Allowing you to cook simple meals with leftovers and avoids the need to spend more money on expensive and over packaged takeaways. Then all you need to do is replace any item as you need it.
3. Write A Shopping List
Write a list of everything you need before you go to the shop and try to stick to it when you get there. A lot of impulse buys often end up being thrown in the bin.
4. Ignore Any In Store Promotions
Any offers in a shop are there to encourage you to buy more, not spend less. So unless the item is on your shopping list you should try to ignore it.
5. Buy Perishables In Smaller Quantities
If, for example, you buy milk or fruit once a week you are more likely to throw some of it out costing you money. You are better to buy smaller quantities of perishables and shop for them two or three times a week, cutting down on the waste generated and saving you money.
Organise Your Cooking And Save Money
Being organised about what you are cooking can dramatically reduce waste and save you money.
1. Check 'Best Before' Dates
Take note of expiry dates on your perishable products. The 'Best Before' date refers to the quality rather than the food safety so food can be eaten after this date as long s it is stored correctly.
2. Be Creative With Leftover Food & Drink
You should consider freezing any leftovers you have, and use it for a quick meal or snack in the future. Any over ripe fruit could be used to make smoothies (Check this book out for some great smoothy recipes) and any leftover wine could be frozen and kept till the next time you are making a sauce or gravy.
3. Freeze Your Food
If you are not sure when you are going to eat something and it is freezable then store it in the freezer.
4. Watch The Size Of Your Portions
When it comes to cooking things such as rice or pasta it is easy to cook too much and end up throwing the extra in the bin. Instead of guessing how much you will need use a measure. A teacup of rice is enough for two adults and one bowl of uncooked pasta makes two bowls when cooked.
