Self esteem is the feeling of liking and valuing oneself it can be promoted in interactions with children and adults by providing a positive atmosphere for children as they need to feel that they can experiment and that they can fail and not be criticized by others. If children need to be told it needs to be done carefully so it is noticed that although their behavior is inappropriate, they are still wanted. Through praise it is important that it is not just based on achievements, It is important that children are praised for good behavior and helping etc. To promote self-esteem in interactions with children and adults would be to let them speak have a turn to voice their opinion and to let them make choices.
I have done an interaction with two children both children were nearly four years old the activity we did was creative play and we were using the play dough which I had made myself. To help the children raise their self-esteem when either had they had a difficulty to overcome e.g. one of the children couldn't roll the play dough out flat so I reduced the amount of play dough that they were rolling out whilst doing this I praised the child for telling me that they had trouble with rolling it out I said "well done for telling me instead of getting annoyed with the play dough." The child smiled back at me. One of the children made a snowman and he was proud of this I praised him and suggested if he could make something else to go with the snowman "like to make the scarf, nose and buttons for the snowman" to extend the activity so that it would promote self-esteem in this interaction the child went on to make buttons for the snowman a nose and a friend snowman he was made up with himself for this and he got his picture taken for the Christmas creative wall.
Self-esteem is known as confidence; self-esteem and self-reliance are linked together. A child who is independent and self-reliant is likely to have a high self-esteem, whereas a child with low self-esteem needs encouragement and help from carer's to become independent and confident. Self-esteem is also about the confidence of a person which depends on how much a person likes them.
Having a high self esteem is important to a child as it will allow the child to fulfill their potential and the child will feel confident to try new things, make new friends, socialize and to be popular. A child who is confident will attempt to take on new challenges and be brave.
A child who has low self-esteem will have low confidence and can easily be put off if the child thinks that he/she is unable to succeed in the task. Children who have low self-esteem sometimes purposely misbehave due to the child being unable and afraid of doing a task and trying hard. Activities that are useful for children with low self-esteem are activities that are lead in a positive way as children are able to gain satisfaction from creative play they do and this will help build their confidence and self-esteem. Manipulative play is also good for building up self-esteem by making creatures out of items like duplo or building bricks etc. song time can be a time for a child to increase his/her self-esteem by learning a new song.
Children have emotional needs if a child is missing either achievement, affection, belonging, independence, social approval or self-esteem it may lead to behavior which is unaccepted as children struggle to get what they need. There are a few affects of a child's self-esteem some of them are obvious as to if they are from a different culture their ethnicity would be different and they would become shy due to what people might say about them, child abuse or neglect, poverty as the children's parents may have low incomes so their child/children will not be able to have the latest trend and multilinguism.
Circle time is helpful in raising a child's self-esteem as an adult who is doing circle time will encourage everyone to join in/ participate in the event. In different settings circle time can be known as carpet time, show and tell, news time etc.
Circle time is where the children sit on the carpet or mat etc and have a discussion this discussion may be about what the children have done in the setting, at home, what they like, what their doing at the weekend etc. the discussion is when each child is given time to speck on their turn and listen to others. In some settings children that are not speaking have a teddy or a quiet toy to keep themselves occupied whilst it is somebody else's turn, an adult in circle time must help to establish ground rules about listening and respect for the views of others for circle time to work.
