Q. We are on Great Plains and now switching to B1 and need data conversion from one to another. How do we do that?
A. Lets talk about details. ERP brand known as Great Plains is actually collection of several packages. Currently it is owned by Microsoft Business Solutions and product name is Dynamics GP. Dynamics GP since version 8.0 is available on MS SQL Server database platform exclusively. Earlier versions such as 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, etc. were also available on Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve and Ctree. SQL Server version was also known as eEnterprise (5.0, 5.5, and 6.0). And finally there was also Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Mac 9.5, 9.2 and earlier releases. If you are on Microsoft SQL Server platform then data export is simple and it is typically done in Query Analyzer or Management Studio. Lets finish the answer here and well discuss other platforms below
Q. Good points above as we are on Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 on Pervasive SQL Server and need to pump data out from there. Please comment
A. Btrieve connection technology in time was based on DDF files (Field, File and Index.DDF). There is utility GenDDF (Generate Data Definition Files). Good news is the fact that you can create DDF files for third party dictionaries listed in Dynamics.set file including such popular in time as Mekorma, Intellisol and KampData
Q. We do not see the match so far. And interesting thing is that we are using old DOS interface
A. Well then you are likely on Great Plains Accounting for DOS. This application is a bit mysterious. Its data files are located in GPS folder on the server (default first company goes to GPData folder) with extension .Dat typically associated with Ctree. But this is actually Btrieve. To export tables you need DDF files as we already mentioned above. The best data export tool in our opinion is Pervasive Control Center where you can execute precise SQL Select statement and save result into text file. Data Definition Files generation is also tricky as you need to have original floppy see instructions in ODBC manual available on original installation CD. We are supporting all Great Plains vintage systems so feel free to call us
Q. Very good but how do we move historical documents to SAP B1?
A. This question is simple to answer and every one certified consultant should be able to answer. There are CSV (Excel) templates in Data Transfer Workbench. Fill them out and you should be able to import (of course with some learning curve and restoring from backup)
Q. How do we contact you?
A. Please email us help@efaru.com or call 1-866-304-3265, 1-269-605-4904
