Defend Yourself! How To Find A Good, Expert Self Defense Program You Can Trust - With Your Life!
One of the biggest problems in the world of martial arts and self defense instruction
, especially if you are serious about learning how to defend yourself, is the general lack of legitimate, qualified instructors who actually know what they're talking about - AND have the experience to be able to teach you how to not be beaten, broken, or killed in a real street attack!
The focus of this article is to share suggestions that will allow you to actually find a real expert who you can trust to teach you how to defend yourself in a real, street, self defense situation. Because, you must remember that, until you can actually do this for yorself, you are literally putting your life in the hands of whoever you choose as a teacher.
Of course, if you are looking to be the next ultimate fighting world champion, or want to learn martial arts because they are "cool," then it doesn't matter who you train with - at least not as far as defending yourself against a street attack is concerned!
This is one of the insights shared in a book called, "The Karate-Myth." This book really focuses in on why most martial arts and self defense programs are WRONG, and what you need to know, and be able to do, to really be able to protect yourself in the real world - against real-world attackers who don't care what color your belt is, or how many trophies you have!
I'm going to assume that, if you're still reading this article, and you haven't clicked off to read the next "how to..." offering in the sea of information called the Internet, that this is what you're looking for...
Real training, for real people, in a real world!
So, to help you get the kind of training that you really need to be truly safe in today's often violent world, here are a few suggestions for finding a legitimate expert who can teach you how to "not die" at the hands of some crazy nutjob who's running loose in the world our there.
1) Shop Around - Thoroughly check out all of the schools and training clubs in your area. Make sure that you are really clear about what it is that you want and need. This will keep you from getting lured in by the flashy kicks and cool looking uniforms that have absolutely NOTHING to do with real-world self defense!
2) Be Critical - Watch out for the schools that say that they are offering "a little bit of everything." Think about it. Who would you trust with your surgery... the expert who knows that area and condition like the back of his hand - or the general practitioner who "dabbles in a little bit of this, and a little bit of that?" What you're looking for is the teacher who is secure enough, and sure enough about what he does, that he doesn't have to try to be everything to everybody to lure you in.
3) Be Comfortable - Buying the knowledge and instruction for defending yourself against brutal attackers is not the same as buying a sofa or a car. You can't take it back if you find out that what you learned doesn't work. And, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time in the school, and with the instructor that you choose. So, make sure that you get a good feel for the place - make sure that the place feels comfortable, inspires confidence, and feels positive.
4) Be Honest With Yourself - You need to make sure that you feel a sense of trust, not just in the person, but also the instructor's abilities. There needs to be a good fit. And remember, as I said before, it's one thing for this person to wear a Black Belt, be able to do awesome looking flying, jump kicks, or to have won a bunch of shiny trophies; and something altogether different for him to be able to teach you how to defend yourself in a real attack. Remember that, as soon as you join this dojo, it will become a part of your personal identity. Make sure that you would be proud of the instructor and group with which you will be affiliated with.
5) Do Your Homework - Find out about any school, and it's instructor, that you are considering joining. He or she should give you a sense of confidence with, not just their skills, but also with the way they carry themselves. Check around in your community and find out what kind of reputation the instructor has. After all, you will want to be associating with someone who lives up to the lessons that the school professes to be teaching.
6) Be Aware - You must never forget that black pieces of cloth can be purchased online and off by anyone, regardless of whether or not the person ever actually earned the right to wear it. Far too many people are impressed by the "idea" of what the Black Belt is supposed to represent, that they forget that it is not the belt that gives the person his or her power and abilities, but the person who lives up to (or not) what the belt symbolizes.
Remember that you, and you alone, are responsible for your choices. And, especially so when you are seeking out someone who is supposed to be teaching you how to really, honestly, and effectively defend yourself!
