By the Dexter Season 5 Episode 9 ''Teenage Wasteland'' the series finally began to find its way. Dexter and Lumen would not be lovers (at least not for now), but partners. "Take It" gave us several great moments, watching Dexter give Lumen a shopping list of ritual-kill accessories. Then, the traditional laying of the plastic was done as a two-person team. The new dynamic was finally starting to materialize. By Episode 9, "Teenage Wasteland," the Dexter creative team had brought it all together. "Teenage Wasteland" was a pivotal episode in the season. Both good and bad characters were allowed to evolve and show their true colors. Dexter showed us just how far he'd grown as a person (or a human) since season 1. And, Debra, well, she still has serious relationship issues.

Debra usually plays "second fiddle" to Dexter, Miami homicide and most everyone on show. However, in this episode, Debra finally got a chance to stand up and be an individual. In her showdown with LaGuerta, Debra pushes her strained relationship with the lieutenant. This was one of the best Debra scenes to date on Dexter. It was great to see her emotional outcry to LaGuerta's actions. Further, it was interesting to see the parallels between Dexter and herself. In her first kill, she tells Dexter and Quinn that she felt nothing. Dexter empathizes with his sister and tells her that Harry said that some people don't deserve to live. Is this foreshadowing of Debra finally learning the truth about her brother?

Astor (Christina Robinson) returned to Dexter, wearing makeup and a bad breath hangover. She was shocked to learn that Lumen had taken up residence in her old house. Harrison apparently calling Lumen "momma" didn't do much to help the situation. While her escapades as a teenage runaway seemed to be nothing more than a rebellious outcry, we learned that Astor was just trying to help a friend suffering from the abuse of her mother's boyfriend. Dexter finally finds a common bond with Astor. They both want to protect the people close to them. Dexter takes his Dark Passenger out for a stroll and delivers a surgical beat down to the boyfriend. Bye-bye.

Let's face it. After over four seasons of Dexter, we've learned one thing he's not infallible. And, despite his claims to not being human he is about as human as they come. Dexter just can't help from committing errors. Yes, he learns, but often at a huge price. His latest error was in misjudging Jordan Chase. While in Chase's locker room, Dexter took a drop of blood from the vile Chase wears around his neck. Unfortunately, Dexter forgot to close Chase's locker on the way out. Sure enough, Chase realizes that Dexter and he have a lot to discuss. In the final moments of "Teenage Wasteland," Chase called up Lumen to let her know that he is on to both she and Dexter.
