Diabetes - The Gentle Signs
Of the estimated 3 million people who have type 2 diabetes in Britain
, 1.2 million don't know they have it.
Why is that important?
Good question, after all, if they are unaware they have it, presumably it's not affecting them because if it was, they'd notice?
No.
That's the problem with type 2 diabetes, like cancer (although I must stress the two diseases are not linked or are similar), both can creep up unnoticed. Fortunately, with diabetes the treatments are many and varied.
The earlier type 2 diabetes is diagnosed the better. Although it is not curable (and beware of any product that says otherwise), treatment makes it manageable.
Thats why it's harder for people who are unaware that they are type 2 diabetic.
What are the symptoms?
There is always a danger in not wanting to disturb the doctor, for whatever reason. It may be because we think we're just a little under the weather, or we simply don't want to be told that we need to rest. Indeed, I've never liked going to visit my doctor, I think I'm concerned that he will find something is seriously wrong. Unfortunately, thats exactly what happened.
In my case, I 47 years old, working in a physical job and just assumed that ever increasing tiredness was just a sign of age. I could sleep anywhere for just 15 minutes, then wake up completely refreshed.
Together with my sleeping, my eyesight became slightly blurred, and I was irritable - again i though i was just turning into a grumpy old man!
Getting the picture?
Those traits that I considered to be a natural result of getting older were in fact the signs of type 2 diabetes.
In addition to the sleepiness, impaired eyesight and irritability, I started to drink large amounts of water, like 5 gallons a day!
I finally made myself go to the doctor when I could no longer drive! I woke one Saturday morning and everything was just a blur of colour. The doctor diagnosed type 2 diabetes and perscribed me some tablets. four months later however, i was perscribed insulin which I take by injection.
The only good thing is that, contrary to popular belief, I can lead a pretty normal life, but had I gone to the doctor sooner, it may have been that I could have avoided having to inject myself with insulin twice a day, and just been treated with diet and tablets.
