It is said that there are a million different types of smell in the whole world

. These different types of smell can be described in simple terms as sweet, musty or rancid. Even without seeing what the source is, most people can easily identify what the smell is all about.

Just like how greyhounds find what they are looking for, so can you use your smell to identify the current condition of your washing machine.

If your washing machine is having problems with its core electrical system or has short-circuited, you would catch a faint smell of burning rubber. On the other hand, if you can smell a musty odor, there is a great probability that your washing machine has either mold or mildew inside it, or has standing water somewhere in the ducts.

One way by which you can ensure that your washing machine is not providing grounds for any mold or mildew formation is to ensure that there is no standing water as well as any source of moisture inside your washing machine. By keeping a dry, clean washer, you are ultimately killing off any mold growth. Aside from this, make sure also that you use the right type of soap for your machine in order to keep residues from building up along the walls and the ducts.

It also pays to run a cycle of water with lemon juice or baking soda once a week. Aside from taking away any washer odor, it also helps ensure that your tub is sparkling clean. If you do not have lemon juice, you can also go for white vinegar or mild bleach. Run a cycle of hot water with baking soda afterwards to ensure that the smell of vinegar does not cling to your tub. You can run the mild bleach in your washing machine while you are doing your white clothes.

You can also opt to have any of those commercially available washer cleaner solutions for your washing machines. Such solutions are specifically formulated for removing grime, mold, mildew and musty smell from your washing machine. There are even some which you can use while you are doing your laundry.
