Digital Multimeters and Maintenance Tips for Better Performance

Digital multimeters are versatile instruments that can be used as ammeters, voltmeters, ohmmeters and many more. Unlike their analog counterparts, these multimeters offer readings in digital format and are hence far more accurate and precise. However, there are certain maintenance tips that are to be followed to get the best from these digitalized multimeters.

These tips are to be followed not only while operating but also when you store and service them. While using digital multimeters as ammeter to measure electric current, it is recommended that you should never ground yourself. It is always essential to isolate your body from the ground. You can use dry clothing; rubber shoes, rubber mat, or any approved insulating material for the purpose. Also you should never touch exposed metal pipes, outlets, fixtures, etc., which might be at ground potential for total safety.

If you are using digital multimeters as voltmeter then always be careful when working with voltages above 60V do or 30V ac rms. Again, before opening the case, it is suggested that you should always disconnect test leads from all energized circuits for preventing any unwarranted accidents.

Digital multimeters should always be kept away from excess heat and moisture conditions for their proper functioning. You may keep the back covers open when you are not using them. However, you should never operate the meters unless the back cover is in place and fastened completely. If you are keen on cleaning the digital multimeters, it is not advisable to use abrasives or solvents. This would damage it beyond repair at times. Instead use only a damp cloth and mild detergents if you really have to clean them.

Digital multimeters need to be serviced and calibrated from time to time. It is recommended that you should always get them repaired from qualified and trained service technicians. Do not ever try to do it yourself.
