Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Frankel says, "Having an image of an individual in front of you and manipulating that nose on the screen is better that the patient showing me pictures of 15 other women's noses she likes." Patients who viewed their computer image before going under the knife were happier with the results than patients who did not. A study related to the morphing software used by cosmetic surgeons and its effects on doctors and patients alike has been published in Facial Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Frankel feels that the computer imaging software is a major development in the cosmetic surgery industry. Before its advent, patients would show their doctors photographs of celebrities they admired and ask the doctors if they could help them look like their favourite stars. Plastic surgeons found it very difficult to make any promises because a person's looks are unique and no plastic surgeon can alter basic structures.

Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon Dr. Richard Fleming spoke of the difficulties he faced trying to explain to the patient the importance of having realistic expectations. He said that no cosmetic surgeon can give a woman with a large Roman nose the tiny turned up nose of her dreams because it just cannot be done. Moreover, the same nose looks different on different faces.

Computer imaging software might have made the cosmetic surgeon's task easier, but rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery is still a tough considering the complex structure of the nose. Noting the importance of the nose, the crucial functions it has to perform, and its prominent position on the face, Dr. Frankel said that the healing process of a rhinoplasty can distort a surgeon's best efforts. Moreover, a lot of what constitutes a pretty nose is subjective, said the doctor, adding that "what one person thinks is a pretty nose another may not."

Frankel made a comparative study of the computer-generated images and the after photos of his rhinoplasty patients and came to the conclusion that patients consider the computer images much more accurate than cosmetic surgeons do, which means that a doctor will have a much more satisfied rhinoplasty patient if he/she produces a result as close to the computer-generated image as possible.

The computer imaging software is now used by several plastic surgeons because it really helps doctors and patients understand what the patient might look like after a cosmetic surgery procedure. The software, which is manufactured by United Imaging Inc costs $4,000.
