Online privacy may be dead but data mining is alive and well; the data miners are busy at work. They are working overtime, re-assembling each and every digital bit of info from new networks and websites.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently commented on data privacy in an interview with MSNBC; it went something like this: if you don't want people to know what you are doing online, then maybe you should not be doing it. The statement makes good sense.
The latest trend is toward Tech CEO's to give lip service to "privacy concerns" while actually weakening privacy settings. And in all reality, with the state of digital literacy in the US, the average Facebook user has no clue what data goes where or what the web-site's EULA is all about. Jim Rapoza, a columnist and tech analyst for EWeek, has a great commentary on privacy where he concludes,"...Facebook took away my option to show my friend list to my friends but not any Bozo who found my profile doing a Google search." Many users of "new inclusion" media sites (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Gowalla, etc.) know that privacy concerns are a trade off for promotion and being on the digital cutting or leading edge.
In Washington, the FTC is concerned that privacy protection rules have not kept up with technology. Are they kidding? How can government keep up with people voluntarily posting their personal data from every coffee shop and mobile device. I read the other day that a FourSquare wannabe, Miso is introducing a network that features an app and site that will allow people, who never get as far as Starbucks, to post on it's "check-in networking" site. So now, if you can't become Mayor of your local restaurant or cafe, you can become Mayor of your backyard, or watching your favorite TV show, or your living room couch. This one is gonna look pretty silly in the time capsule.
Maybe Congress and the FTC are onto something is working on the next generation "do not call list."
A national "do not track list" has definite merits in trying to keep the data miners away. 'Online redlining' is a real concern and it exists today; the practice will become more advanced over time. Much of what get's posted on social networks is pretty inane. But more and more aggregation and compilation of these bits are of great value to marketers. And to banks, employers, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, etc.
