Discover Beirut

When you reach Beirut, you will feel its energy and dynamism almost immediately

. Beirut was quite a prosperous city from as far back as 5,000 years ago. It is known as the "city that would not die" because it withstood more than one and a half decades of conflict. A lot of modern developments are currently taking place, yet the city will still take you back in time, giving you both the opportunity to learn its history and enjoy your time. There is a lot of interest in the city from different parts of the world. Beirut is well equipped to handle a large number of visitors, considering that it has the largest port in the East Mediterranean region.

Beirut was documented in cuneiform inscriptions from as far back as the 24th C BC. The Romans turned it into their colony in the first century, when it was known as Berytus. They established a well known law school there that operated up until the Byzantine era.

551 AD was a tragic time for the city, as it suffered from the effects of fire, tidal waves and earthquakes. Arab Muslim forces later took control of the city and the Crusaders started ruling it from 1110 to 1291, when the Mamlukes took control of it. The Ottoman took over the city in 1516, a reign that lasted for 400 years.

Beirut is one of the cities that has been inhabited continuously for centuries. Many of the early archaeological findings were largely accidental. It was only after the end of the war in 1991 that well planned investigations were put in place. There is a collaboration between archaeologists and developers to ensure that new constructions do not obliterate the past before important discoveries are made.

There are many tourist attractions in Beirut, some of which are mentioned below.

Group of Five Columns

The columns are on the left side of St. George Maronite Cathedral. They were discovered in 1963. They were originally part of a great colonnade from the Roman era.

Roman Baths

The Roman baths were first discovered between 1968 and 1969 and were excavated and cleaned more between 1995 and 1997. The baths used to serve the residents of the city.

Highly Carved Colonnade

The five column colonnade was discovered in the 1940s. They were initially part of the early Roman basilica. Later, the columns were placed on Damascus Street opposite the National Museum, which itself opened its doors in 1942.

Raouche

There are a number of things that you will enjoy in this area. The Pigeon Rocks are what people mostly associate with the place. These are rock formations that seem to be on constant watch. You can enjoy a refreshing walk along the seashore. Flints and other early tools were discovered here, giving indications of the earliest inhabitants of the region.

Medieval Wall

This is an ancient wall that dates back to the time of the Crusaders.

The Grand Serail

This was an Ottoman military barracks that was erected in 1853. The building, which at one time also served as the French governor's headquarters, was turned into a Governmental Palace after independence.
