A journey up the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro is a dream trekking endeavor for any adventure seeking enthusiast. It being the highest mountain in Africa and the fourth highest of the Seven Summits, makes it highly challenging. Located in Tanzania, it is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and is composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo 19,340 feet; Mawenzi 16,896 feet; and Shira 13,000 feet. The two peaks Mawenzi and Shira are extinct while Kibo, which is also the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again.

Mount Kilimanjaro has a very interesting geology. Created by the catastrophic movements in the earth's crust millions of years ago, the ash and lava covered slopes make it impressive. Deep gorges and glaciers make for a fine view, though the glaciers are melting quickly which is a cause of concern. What makes it all the more interesting is that going up the peak, you will pass through five different kinds of ecological zones, so there are the lower slopes which have a tropical condition, the rainforests that receive the highest amount of rainfall and the moorland, both having the most splendid flora and fauna, the high desert where the conditions can be a little harsh and finally the arctic zone or the summit which is an icy wasteland receiving strong sunshine during the day and having freezing temperatures at night. The variation in climate and vegetation add to the diversity and beauty of the mountain and make the journey more captivating but at the same time it makes it more challenging as many people are not able to cope up with the changing and the harsh weather conditions. The best time to visit is from January to March when the weather is warm with only an occasional brief shower and from June to October, when it is a little colder yet the busiest season.

Due to the weather conditions and also the fact that it was considered as dangerous owing to the active volcanoes, not many people dared to climb the challenging slopes of Mountain Kilimanjaro and hence there were many stories surrounding it. The mystery around it made it more exciting and aroused the interest of many people, personalities and writers in it. It remains an exciting place to this day and you can find interesting literature on it.

Trekking on Mount Kilimanjaro is indeed a thrilling experience due to all these and many more reasons. However, at the same time it is not like any other trip. There are still dangers associated with it, like many people face altitude mountain sickness. The oxygen levels at the summit are half of that at sea levels so it is not an easy trip.
