Discover a Floating Village on Stilts in Cambodia's Magical Kompong Khleang Village

Tucked away from the tourist heavy streets of Siem Reap lies a scenic wonder that has remained intact for centuries, evading the tides of changing times that moulded the landscapes surrounding its enclave. Affectionately dubbed Kompong Khleang Village, this mythical village lies a mere 40km from the heart of Siem Reap on the northern end of Tonle Sap Lake. Remote in every sense of the word, this quaint fishing community is best known for its unique housing structures that consist mainly of stilted housed along the banks of the lake.

Remaining virtually unvisited by a majority of the tourists who flock to Siem Reap, this permanent lakeside residential area is also one of the largest of its kind in all of Cambodia. Mainly accessible via the lake and by road at certain periods of the year Kompong Khleang is quite literally littered with hundreds of settlements, homes and other establishments that at times soar 10m above the water level. Surrounded by flooded forests, the village itself faces severe instances of flooding at various times of the year which sees the lake's water level rising dramatically.

A tour of this magical floating village is of course incomplete without a visit to its many restaurants, shops and school that are all located in whimsically positioned stilted structures. In the centre of the village one finds the hamlet's market region set alongside the village's primary school and health centre. A beautiful pagoda can also be spotted in this area that is situated on a small hillock that keeps the buildings in this quarter dry and free from flooding throughout the year.

Home to a rich variety of bird species the venue is a haven for bird watchers as well as would-be shutterbugs and photographers who wish to document this truly unique landscape in the heart of Cambodia's countryside.
