Dispelling Common Cancun Myths Part 3

Professor Bruce Lincoln once defined myth as "ideology in narrative form"

. As teacher of anthropology, the history of religion and the history of culture at the University of Chicago, Lincoln has come to be an expert on myth. His explanation for the phenomenon is certainly more concise than those of Oxford or Cambridge Dictionaries, but it doesn't address accuracy or truthfulness. When you hear someone's description of Cancun, it is their own vision filled with personal perspective, but not necessarily true. In essence, it is their own personal myth. If you want to know what the real Cancun is like, there are two things you need to do: read on to gain solid facts that dispel common Cancun myths, and go there yourself!

Drug Myth

Now it's time to dispel another Cancun myth! To provide a real and true perspective on the things most people once thought they knew the truth about. Columbia and Brazil are other nations with which the media has taken pains to uncover local drug cultures. The potential for financial gain, due to the large border the US and Mexico share, has highlighted and fostered these stories. Like every nation on this earth, Mexico has a drug culture. England has a drug culture too, right along with the US, Canada, Japan, France and so on. Mexico's is focussed in and around a few small towns at the Mexico-US border, hundreds of miles away from Cancun.

For some odd reason, many misinformed travelers believe Mexico has little or no drug laws and there is no enforced legal drinking age. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Mexican police force and military have clamped down hard on the drug trade in those border towns, and this has led to increased conflict. All narcotics are illegal in Mexico. The cultivation, purchase, sale, possession and use of narcotics are illegal in Mexico. Don't try to purchase narcotics in Mexico, unless you don't mind being criminally charged and possibly ending up in jail.

The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years. No bending of the rules or exceptions are made. Underage persons found consuming alcohol will be arrested. Cancun clubs in particular have a reputation for allowing underage partiers on the premises. Likewise, Cancun police are well aware of the issue. Having one's ID checked at night clubs by an officer, is no longer uncommon, and today police are less easy-going about lax club policies. Don't delude yourself into thinking that the above myth is in fact true.
