It's another busy day and you wonder how you be able to keep going

, seeing all the patients, deciding what needs to be done urgently and what can be left for another day, keeping up-to-date with dictating correspondence and making life and death decisions on the ward.

To get all your tasks done and have the energy and motivation to do other things apart from medical work you need to have plenty of energy. You need enough energy to keep going for a huge number of hours every day so that you remain alert and efficient however many hours you've already been working.

What are the essentials for maintaining plenty of energy and being able to work efficiently through the long hours of medical work, yet still having a reserve of energy for your out of work activities.

In essence this maintenance of energy boils down to the basics of looking after your mind, your body and spirit. Although this may be different for different people, it can be summarised as eating well, exercising regularly and relaxing.


This means eating healthy food on a regular basis, and not poisoning your body with excess alcohol, and high-fat food with little nutritional value.it's important to make sure you keep your blood sugar at a good level by having something to eat every 2 to 3 hours. This means not missing meals and having regular snacks. Your body, mind and spirit will not benefit from you working through the lunch hour forgetting to have breakfast.

Keep in mind that maintaining your energy levels will increase your efficiency as a doctor because you will be able to think more clearly and work more quickly.

Although you may get a certain amount of exercise and when you walk around the hospital going from ward to ward or to the clinic, there is a possibility that you may be sitting in one room all day. If you are working in general practice you may find this is more likely to be the case so you will need to make time to take a walk every day.

As well as walking you may decide to go to a gym regularly or do some other form of exercise such as yoga. When you move your body, even if you are feeling tired, the outcome is very often a feeling of increased energy.

Practice relaxation, meditation or some time when you take your mind away from medical things and connects with nature, to refresh your spirit.

By doing these things regularly you will have the energy to get much more done during your day and to enjoy your life much more.
