Dogs Poop... It's True. Here Are Your Pet Waste Disposal Options
Everyone knows that dogs poop, it happens all the time
. The problem is with the pet waste disposal. You probably waste much thought on your dogs poop if you have a huge yard or live in the country. Pet waste disposal is a much bigger issue if you have a smaller yard. This is even more important if you have multiple dogs. This article talks about many of the options that are available for dealing with and disposing of your dogs poop.
Dealing with your dogs poop and handling pet waste disposal are the biggest issues dog owners have to deal with. If you live with a smaller yard (or no yard) this is an even bigger issue because you can't let the dog's poop sit in the grass until the end of the season. If you do, you're likely to make your neighbors a little crabby.
The challenges associated to dealing with pet waste disposal are numerous: 1) Waiting until you get home from work means it's probably dark outside and you won't be able to see the dog's poop to pick it up. 2) Waiting until the temperatures go up means it will be gross and squishy. 3) If you don't pick it up very often, you're making it more likely that it will get stepped on and tracked inside. Chances are... this won't be a good thing.
You have many different options available when determining how to handle your dog's poop.
Store It, Then Throw It In The Trash - If you decide to handle your pet waste disposal in this manner you need a small (plastic) container that will be solely for holding your dog's poop. You will need to line the container with trash bags so that each week you can throw it in the trash. When dogs poop... it smells. I'm sure that comes as a shocker, right? Because of this you need to make sure that your container has a fairly tight cover to contain the odor. You will also want your container to have a "lip" so that when it rains, the water doesn't run inside the container. The warmer it is outside, the bigger the odor so in the summer you will want to also use dog waste bags daily when you pick up the dog's poop. If you are handling your pet waste disposal by throwing it in the trash and these steps don't contain the odor, you can use Ziploc Freezer bags with a double zipper. The odor issue will be resolved, but this is probably an environmental issue.
Everyone is talking these days about how plastic bags stick around for like 6 trillion years. Biodegradable dog waste bags are obviously better for the environment because they are.... biodegradable. Pretty self explanatory, right? Even if you do use biodegradable dog waste bags, you ARE saving the plastic from going in the trash, but the dog's poop is still being put in the trash which isn't really a great idea. Some cities are starting to make rules about throwing using the weekly trash collection as a pet waste disposal system. The movement is gaining momentum so keep your eye on the local papers to see if this issue is a hot topic in your area.
Flush It - Using your own toilet for pet waste disposal is another option. If you're not freaked out by taking your dog's poop into the house, this is a great environmental answer. The dog's poop goes into the septic system where it belongs and can be broken down properly. They now make flushable bags so you can pick it up, turn the bag inside out and flush it.
In Ground Septic System - There are many options that allow you to pretty easily create your own septic system to handle your pet waste disposal. You basically dig a hole in your yard, insert a container, add the dog's poop and occasionally add a special digester powder. The dog's poop is broken down just like a regular septic system and is washed way into the ground. Having two dogs doesn't make this any harder, but you want to pay attention to the size of the unit you buy so it can handle the additional waste. In theory, this is a great idea, but it didn't work that well with our 10 x 10 yard because of the slight odor. The odor wasn't all that bad, just enough that we didn't want to annoy the neighbors with it since there are several within 50 feet of us. If you have a larger yard and can put the system away from your door (and your neighbors), it would work really well for your pet waste disposal needs.
Put It In Your Sewer Drain - This is probably the best environmental answer and the newest news in the world of pet waste disposal options. Put the dog's poop directly into the sewer line for your house. This attachment easily connects to your clean out drain. All you have to do is open the lid and drop in the dog's poop and replace the lid. It's outside, there won't be any odor at all and the dog's poop ends up in your septic system to be handled like it should be. There is no mess, no smelly trash cans and no environmental problems.
