Just as wattle and towel origami, video games villainy become a lost art form. There is no shortage of villains, but there is definitely a shortage of memorable ones in recent times. In even the simplest narrative must hero an obstacle to overcome, and this barrier is usually provided by an individual (or individuals) that aims to prevent the hero. For every thesis there is an antithesis, for every action there is reaction. It's classic storytelling: The main character has made an opposing individual or force, and the struggle leading to the ultimate triumph or tragedy.

Even the simplest video games represent this classic bow. Space Invaders is falling on the ground so you have to destroy them. Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde is tailing you, so you should swallow them up before they gobble you. Now we have reached an age where the media can offer a more complex story. Why is it that so many modern games use so much time telling a story when the story is sacrificed? Most good stories come from having good grades and we usually have a completely identify with, but it is often the villain, giving the sharp moments that stay with us long after we left the game behind.Actually this is the case in almost any narrative art form. Where would Luke be without Darth Vader? How would we see Cinderella without her evil stepsisters? What would drive Hamlet, if not the anger inspired by his murderous uncle Claudius? Often good heroes are only worth rooting for because of the villains who prefer their most interesting or extraordinary properties. Without Vader Luke could still just be bull's-eyeing some WOMP rats. (Of course, he would not have been born, but since the point!)
What is it that gives a good villain? And what makes some games manage to deliver a great antagonist, while others fail? I think good villains usually have four characteristics that make them leap off the screen and twist in your psyche. That's not to say that every great villain has all these properties do not possess them equally. But these basic characteristics common to the villains that we remember best - and villains who lacks them is tacky, boring or cliche. Let's take a look at these properties and some examples of games that use them to proper effect, and games that had a lot of opportunities to grow. Caution: Spoilers
Humanity
Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)
Sephiroth is not just evil for evil's sake: He is the result of a genetic experiment using Jenova's foreign cells. Realizing that he is a biological horror, he burns Nibelheim to the ground and trying to steal Jenova with the hope of finding a planet where it can thrive.Like many great villains of literature, is Sephiroth a great warrior driven to darkness by a life-altering betrayal.
Nene (Blue Dragon)
Nene seeks world domination. Why he attacks Shu village? In his own words: "I wanted to hear your screams." Nene's single personality characteristic is that he is evil. And in a game where each character can be boiled down to a single exaggerated features is a great villain needs all the more. Alas, had the developer Mistwalker not understand that large antagonists is more than just mean.
Motive
Kane (Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath)
While a good villain does not reveal his deepest longings in a monologue the moment he appears (see: Mystery, below), we still get a sense of his ambitions. And if lines like "Comrade President: I am the future" was not enough, at least in the biblical undertones to his name and Seth's development of jealousy in the original Command & Conquer would provide plenty of metaphorical coherence Kane's motives.
Reapers (Mass Effect 2)
Here's what we know: The Reapers come. These highly advanced aliens revels in galactic cleansing every now and then. Maybe they'll come to pick our technology, perhaps they bask in the thrill. But after two games, the Reapers are not more interesting than the aliens in Independence Day, and we know even less about them.Surely, the developer who created Jon Irenicus can do better than this.
Mystery
Conqueror (The Last Remnant)
Mystery come from more than just a creepy stare, though it certainly helps. In The Last Remnant, looking to the Conqueror, yes, conquer. We know that he collects remnants, presumably to exploit their power. But history always points to a connection between him and leading man rush, and every time The Conqueror appears on your desire to uncover the truth increases. This is the most interesting character in the game because a part, we will discover what makes this man tick, but also because we want to discover what shampoo keeps his hair so luxurious.
General Sarrano (Bullet Storm)
Each character in Bullet Storm is a nasty potty mouth meat head, but none is more grating than its profane villain. He is obviously insane, irrational and psychopathic. How is this guy who is responsible for something with so insane to constantly monitor? As they say, it is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt. Profanity is Bullet Storm's shtick, but it makes for a villain with all the intrigue of a whoopee cushion.
Presence
Andrew Ryan (BioShock)
You only meet Andrew Ryan in person once, but his presence felt in every moment of the game. Rapture is Andrew Ryan, so even when his voice is not heard, Ryan is always there with you, his faith and architectural masterpiece, a constant reminder of his philosophy and ambitions. You can not forget an antagonist, since his creation surrounds you.
? (Dragon Age II)
Dragon Age II's story suffers in part because it has not a villain at all. In some ways, allow its political factions you to create your own antagonists, and I suppose some may see a vital character who makes a shocking act towards the end of the game as a villain. But without giving you a real enemy, says Dragon Age II aimless, and there is nothing or no more than to triumph.
