Driving As A Job Or Business Part 1

This is as true today as it has been for centuries; trade is the cornerstone of civilisation

, and without transport, there is no trade. In other words, if youre looking for a new career, a safe one that can weather any storm, then youll be hard-pressed to find one thats more secure than transportation.

True, trade rises and falls, and this affects the amount of vacancies available, but the ability to transport and deliver items safely, securely, on time and undamaged, is something that is always in high demand, and anyone who has experience and has built a good reputation and delivery record will have little difficulty finding a new employer or customer.

Job or Business?

Of course the first thing youll want to consider is whether you want to work in the industry as an employee or if you would prefer to go out on your own.

An employee has several practical advantages, firstly there are employee benefits and in addition to those, as an employee, you will enjoy certain rights and entitlements. You will also have set hours and paid overtime.

Running a business is a very different situation. For one thing the costs will be higher because, unlike driving as an employee, you will need to have your own transportation, which you will need to tax and insure yourself. You will also have to pay your own fuel.

The pros of business ownership are, firstly, more freedom. You can pick and choose your routes and your clients as well as having far more autonomy over every aspectof the business, including scheduling. For most people thats incentive enough, though the real incentive is that, as a business owner, you have the opportunity to expand, to hire people to work for you, such as drivers, dispatchers, loaders and office staff, who, if managed correctly, can potentially make you a very rich person indeed.

Getting to that stage can take some doing, of course, and not everybody is cut out for it. Starting off you will need to work long hours, not just to make the deliveries, but also to manage the other areas of your business such as paperwork and accounts. Thats why many people will find the life of a business owner far too stressful. The more entrepreneurially-minded people however will always be magnetically drawn towards business ownership. If you hate punching the time clock and working for the man you may well be one of them. So if you think you have what it takes you should certainly consider taking the plunge; it could be the most expensive decision youve ever made, or the best thing that ever happened in your life, all I can say is that theres only one way to find out.

Next Article we will look at Types of Transport and Licencing requirements.
