A surgical technologist is referred to the medical person who helps the surgeons in conducting the operations and the surgeries successfully. They are also known as scrubs or operating room technicians.

A scrub need to perform various kinds of duties while he or she is on the job. These technologists take care of all the equipments used in the operating room such as, sterilizing them before being used in the surgery, sanitizing the gloves, gown and drapes of the operating room. It's their duty to clean up all the mess after the operation has taken place, keep the environment and space of the surgery room hygienic and clean. They make sure to keep the records of the patients updated, make a note of all the vital signs of the patients. The scrubs also disinfect the body section where the surgery has to performed, collect the specimen for the laboratory analysis. During the surgery they operate the diagnostic machines, pass the instruments, sponges, needles, and maintain the fluid supply such as plasma and blood and so on.

A professional degree or training is required to work as a surgical technologist in a hospital. These degree programs are accredited by the Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). The duration of the degree can be from nine to twenty four months. A minimum requirement for the degree is of a high school diploma and knowledge of subjects such as, biology, chemistry and healthcare. It's essential for a student to qualify all the examinations during the degree and then undergo on the job training for at least two years.

The job opportunities for the surgical technologist are endless. They are the part of the operating team and earn average salaries, which can be summed up as, $32,490 to $46,910 annually.

A surgical technologist has to face many challenges in their job, but the dedication for their work will unlock all the doors in the field and begin the journey of a successful career.
