Dyckman Farmhouse in New York

This farmhouse was originally built by William Dyckman on its family owned land, in 1794. It spreads over few hundred acres with a great architecture work. It has become the focal point of tourist's attraction in 1916. Farmhouse house is a great mark of historical heritage located in the middle of New York City. Many people visit this place to learn about the lifestyles of the first settlers in the New York City.

History

It was in 1600 when Dyckman relocated from Amsterdam to New York City along with his family and built this farmhouse. His two daughters sold the farmhouse to someone else after seventy years. But soon they realized the heritage importance of the place and purchased it back. Later, they donated this farmhouse to State of New York City and it was formally opened to public in 1916.

The Grounds

The farmhouse is built over a few hundred acres of land out of which half of the land is covered by the house. The flora and fauna you find in the garden are planted by the state as a result of 1916 restoration gardening project. You will find a black cherry tree in the farmhouse which is actually the tree planted by Dyckman in his orchard.

A smokehouse was also built nearby to the farmhouse in 1916 along with many military huts in Revolutionary War against British and Hessian. Most the huts were destroyed and the remaining of almost sixty huts was discovered by Reginald Pelham Bolton.

The House

It is a two stories house built eight miles from the Times Square in woods. The front of the house is made of bricks and the others parts are made from field stone. White Clapboard is used for the construction of second story.

You have to go through the central hall to enter the farmhouse. It is connected to many rooms like farm office, dining room, parlor, kitchen and a Relic room. Relic room contains a variety of photographs and artifacts.

One interesting thing here which attracts visitors towards itself is the Nine Man Morris game board which is inset in a big boulder.

The second story is allocated for bedrooms. You will find bedroom and other furniture in each bedroom.

Special Events

Guided Tour

Special Guided tours are available for adults where each tour consists of twenty people. During these tours the guide will explain the history of the farmhouse and about the other features of the Dyckman Farmhouse.

Dyckman House

The farmhouse remains open from Wednesday to Saturday. The opening hours during these days are from 11am to 4pm. On Sunday, the opening hours are from 12pm to 4pm. It remains close on Monday and Tuesday. It also remains closed during Christmas Holidays and on New Year's Eve.

If you are planning to visit the Dyckman House in group, i.e. 10 or more, you have to inform the customer representative at Dyckman House prior to your visit.
