ESL Creative Writing - Expressing Oneself In A Second Language
It is one thing to simply trace letters that form words in English and it's another to participate in ESL creative writing. Being able to come up with a story that not only makes sense, but is also interesting is often hard enough in one's native language. Pulling this feat off in a newly learned language can be very difficult indeed.
Creative writing prompts tend to have one or two questions posed at the beginning, just to get the thought process rolling. Below the question or questions there is a partial sentence that needs to be finished. This is often an if-then statement. After this statement a number of blank lines are posted for the story to be written on.
Most of the writing prompts tend to be light-hearted and easy to create a story off of. Subjects for the prompts might refer to transportation via time machine, finding Leprechaun gold, taking care of a dinosaur, or even what it's like to view a wrestling match with monsters. Any of these topics can be used by any age of person learning English as a second language.
This type of creative writing is a fun way to learn how to express oneself in another language. Creating stories in an interesting manner helps learners of English as a second language work on making themselves clear when telling a story. This activity can easily carry over to everyday life as well.
Using ESL creative writing activities to hone conversational skills isn't uncommon. For instance, a non-native English speaker might arrive on the scene of an accident and can easily ask if the injured person is okay. However, he/she might not be able to efficiently gather a lot of detailed information about what exactly happened or how severely injured the person might be. Creative writing is a great way to learn how to be more detailed in speaking and having it make sense.
