Education and Astrology
Judging the prospect of education is not at all an easy task
, which can be done merely at a glance. The process is rather very complex -- since so many houses and so many planets are involved. It is to be remembered that for judging education, we have to check the concerned houses (which are far too many) and the concerned planets (which are also many) - both main and subsidiary. It should not and must not be concluded from a single house (like the 4th or the 5th), and a single planet (Mercury) as it's natural significator.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 2nd HOUSE :
The 2nd-house indicates 'aptitude' and proficiency, and the Moon can be taken as the natural significator for it. If the 2nd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 2nd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 2nd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 2nd-house, or if the Moon is situated in the 2nd-house, or if the Moon and the 2nd-lord are conjoined together or if these two planets aspect each other, then excellent aptitude and proficiency are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 2nd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 2nd-house, or the 2nd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 3rd HOUSE :
Among other things, the 3rd-house indicates patience and 'informal studies'; Saturn can be taken as the natural significator for these. If the 3rd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 3rd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 3rd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 3rd-house, or if Saturn is situated in the 3rd-house, or if Saturn and the 3rd-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then extreme patience and informal studies to an exceptional extent are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 3rd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 3rd-house, or the 3rd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.
The very same 3rd-house also indicates personality, writing ability and 'hand-writing'; the Sun can be taken as the natural significator for these. If the 3rd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 3rd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 3rd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 3rd-house, or if the Sun is situated in the 3rd-house, or if the Sun and the 3rd-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then impressive personality, exceptional writing ability and 'beautiful' handwriting are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 3rd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 3rd-house, or the 3rd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.
SPECIAL ROLE OF THE ASCENDANT-LORD :
The Ascendant-lord -- even if it is a natural malefic planet -- is the 'super-benefic' planet in the chart. If the Ascendant-lord is situated in a sign or aspect it, then the strength of the sign is increased; and if the Ascendant-lord is conjoined with a planet or aspects it, then the strength of the planet is increased. If the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 4th-house or the 5th-house, or if it aspects the 4th-house or the 5th-house, or if it is conjoined with the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord, or if aspects the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord, then it is a favorable indication for having very good education.
CHECKING FOR "AFFLICTIONS" OF PLANETS :
In general, if a planet is debilitated or combust or eclipsed or retrograde or conjoined with a natural malefic planet or a natural malefic planet aspects it, then it is considered to be afflicted. But when we are specifically considering the prospect of education, certain special points deserve to be duly noted -- since many of these so-called 'affliction' may not act as a hindering factor at all.
Debilitation :
For education, except for the Moon, debilitation can be ignored altogether. But if Moon is found to be debilitated, then the native may not have good aptitude, or may not be endowed with good proficiency -- particularly during the early age-period (till about standard VIII or so); if other things are favorable, then proficiency might become gradually improved up to a considerable extent -- beginning from around the indicated time-period.
Combustion :
For education, combustion of Mercury is totally ignored. A combust Mercury may and can rather give good proficiency and aptitude for learning things. But the combustion of major planets (Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) deserves to be noted with care -- since it can adversely affect the prospect of having good education; it will be more so if the combust planet becomes the lord of- or situated in- the 4th- or the 5th- or the 2nd- houses. The adverse effect of combustion will be more if the Ascendant is Leo (since the combustion-causing planet -- the Sun -- itself becomes the Ascendant-lord).
In case of combustion, the effect will definitely depend on the longitudinal distance from the Sun. If the distance is not more than 1*, then the affliction is really very serious (as it indicates possible serious health-affection, and surely indicates serious problem with eye-sight); if the distance is more than 1* but not more than 3*20', then also it is a hindering factor for education (and profession). If the distance is more than 3*20', then the effect won't be much adverse.
'Eclipsed' condition (close to either Rahu or Ketu) :
For want of a better term, closeness to Rahu or Ketu had been termed as 'eclipsed' condition. As usual, the effect is more if the Sun or the Moon gets 'eclipsed'. Mercury enjoys the complete exception -- as being in an angular (kendra) house from Rahu, it gains strength. For the remaining planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), it is only a minor hindering factor; however, this is dependent on the longitudinal distance (from Rahu or Ketu) -- the affliction is very serious if the distance is not more than 1*; and if the distance is more than 1* but within 3*20', then also things might be pretty bad.
If the distance (from Rahu or Ketu) is 6* or more, then the adverse influence of conjunction with Rahu or Ketu can be ignored altogether.
Retrogression :
For education, except for the Venus, retrogression is rather beneficial; if an education-related planet is retrograde, then it can be taken as a source of strength. If Mercury is retrograde, then the person becomes clever and very practical; if Mars is retrograde, then the person becomes ambitious and is endowed with a sense of pride (which is indirectly an encouraging factor for having good for education); if Jupiter is retrograde, then although the person may have lopsided views and is very much money-minded, he/ she possesses excellent knowledge in grammar, language and literature; if Saturn* is retrograde, then the person is endowed with concentration and he/ she is very much likely to acquire good command in languages other than mother-tongue, including 'foreign' languages (like English, French, German, etc) -- both spoken and written.
However, if Saturn* is retrograde, we have got to look for the presence of the modifying influences in the chart as it may and can give temporary- or permanent- "break" in education. If Saturn is strong (exalted or in own-house or in own-nakshatra), then the "break" in education is likely to be temporary and it may result owing to change of circumstances, or for some undesired constraints; but if Saturn is not strong, or if in spite of being strong it is much afflicted, then the "break" may be permanent and/ or it may result owing to lack of proficiency or failure in qualifying examination (which may even be admission test or preliminary screening).
If Venus is not strong (i.e., not in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), and if it is retrograde, then we have to check whether some modifying influences are operating in the chart; otherwise, with the onset of adolescence, the person may develop unusual interest in matters concerning the 'other' gender -- which may and can adversely affect academic proficiency, and in turn may mar the prospect of having higher education.
Conjunction with (or aspected by) natural malefic planets :
(a) Conjunction with (or aspected by) the Ascendant-lord :
As mentioned earlier, even if the Ascendant-lord is a natural malefic, it is functionally a 'super-benefic'. So, conjunction with the Ascendant-lord will be very beneficial for education.
(b) Conjunction with (or aspected by) a "yoga-karaka" planet (natural or temporal):-
If the natural malefic planet is a natural- or temporal- 'yoga-karaka' planet, then it's conjunction with- or aspect to- any education-related planet will only have desirable- and beneficial- influences.
(c) Conjunction with Rahu :
Except for the Moon, conjunction of Rahu is quite beneficial; if the Moon is situated in close conjunction with Rahu, then the person's thinking might become confused -- which is not at all desirable for having good education. As Rahu signifies 'intution' (or capacity to conclude without much of thinking) and also 'desire' for having the best things of life, Rahu's conjunction with any education-related planet will make him/ her aspire for good education -- so that he/ she can become quite 'respectable' in society by dint of his/ her educational accomplishments.
(d) Conjunction with Ketu :
Ketu is the significator for Computer-education. If Mercury is strong (in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), and if it is situated in an education-related house (the 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th), while Ketu is also placed in any of such houses, then the person can look forward to acquiring good proficiency in Computer operations -- which has been becoming increasingly popular now-a-days.
However, Ketu's close conjunction with Saturn is not very desirable. If modifying influences are not found to be present in the chart, then it indicates the possibility of having serious family-problems, or probable loss of some close relation/s by untimely demise or separation, and/ or acute financial constraints during sometime in life -- which may become a hindering factor, and may become the root-cause for having either temporary- or permanent- "break" in education.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 4th & THE 5th HOUSES :
The 4th-house indicates general education, whereas the 5th-house indicates intellect, memory and merit. The natural significator for both the houses is Mercury. The planets situated in either or both of these two houses (if any), and the planets aspecting either- or both- of these two houses (if any) have much of bearing on the prospect of education. The sign-position, house-position, etc conditions of the 4th-lord and the 5th-lord have also to be taken into account.
If the 4th-lord is situated in exaltation sign or in own-sign or in own nakshatra, or one or more natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 4th-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 4th-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 4th-house, or if Mercury is situated in the 4th-house, or if Mercury and the 4th-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then it can very safely be concluded that the person will have good education.
If the 5th-lord is situated in exaltation sign or in own-sign or in own nakshatra, or one or more natural benefic planet(s) is/ are situated in the 5th-house, or natural benefic planet(s) is/ are aspecting the 5th-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 5th-house, or if Mercury is situated in the 5th-house, or if Mercury and the 5th-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then also it can very safely be concluded that the person will have good education.
INTER-RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ANGULAR- & TRINAL- LORDS :
Any connection between the 4th-house (or 4th-lord) and the 5th-house (or 5th-lord) gives 'application-oriented' or professional education; like engineering, technology, medicine, accountancy, law, etc. Thus, if the 4th-lord and the 5th-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or if they aspect each other -- while Mercury is also strong -- then 'application-oriented' or professional education may and can be expected.
Besides Ascendant and the 4th, there are other angular (kendra) houses -- the 7th and the 10th. And, besides the 5th, the 9th is also a trinal (trikona) house. Any exchange or one-way relationship between the lord of an angular house in a trinal house, or vice versa, is also a very favorable indication for having good education. The connection involving the 5th- (house or lord) generally gives 'application-oriented' education; if the connection involves the 7th, then it may have some connection with business or law; if the connection involves the 9th, then it may give higher education, and/ or it may have some connection with medical education.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 8th, 9th & 12th HOUSES : HIGHER EDUCATION & RESEARCH :
IMPORTANCE OF THE 9th HOUSE :
The 9th-house (and 9th-lord) indicates higher education/ qualification (general post-graduation, higher professional education, 'formal' research*, etc). Jupiter is the significator for wisdom; as such, it is considered to be a natural significator for higher education.
If the 4th-lord is situated in the 9th-house, or if the 9th-lord is situated in the 4th-house, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or these two lords aspect each other, then the person will have higher education/ professional education, in which connection he/ she may have to go to a distant- (or even foreign-) place.
If the 5th-lord is situated in the 9th-house, or if the 9th-lord is situated in the 5th-house, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or these two lords aspect each other, then the person will have higher education/ professional education; he/ she may secure a professional qualification from a foreign institute of repute and/ or through a correspondence course.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 12th HOUSE :
However, serious research* (or 'real search' -- which might be informal studies continued for a very long duration) comes under the governance of the 12th-house (and 12th-lord). Here, Saturn may be taken as a co-significator; this is in addition to the general significator Mercury and special significator Jupiter. If Saturn is situated in the 12th-house or aspects it, while the 4th-lord or the 9th-lord is also situated in the same house or aspects it, then it is a favorable indication : the person will continue his/ her informal studies for a very long duration, and will probably come out with some special findings or observations of your own.
As the 12th happens to be the 4th from the 9th (or the 9th from the 4th), it signifies temporary shifting of residence in connection with education. If education-related planets are inter-related with the 12th-house, then the person may go to a distant inland place (or even a foreign country) in connection with education. If the lord of the 4th- or the 5th- or the 9th- is situated in the 12th-house, or if the 12th-lord is situated in any of these houses (the 4th- or the 5th- or the 9th-), then the person may have to go to a distant place and stay there for a long duration in connection with higher education/ professional education. Alternately, even if you do not go to a distant place, there are chances that you may have to stay in a school/ college/ university hostel/ boarding house.
IMPORTANCE OF THE 8th HOUSE :
The 8th-house has governance over untoward happenings, accidental mishaps, death, mysteries, forensic studies, mystique and occult subjects (like Astrology, etc). If the 8th-house or the 8th-lord becomes related to the 4th-house or 4th-lord or the 5th-house or 5th-lord, the 5th-house is well-disposed, and Mercury is also strong, then a person may have advance studies and conduct researches in the fields of mystique and occult subjects like Astrology. A strong Mars in relation to the 8th-house may give informal studies and/ or higher education in connection with crimes and criminal- psychology, behavior, proceedings, laws, clauses, terms, etc and/ or also about detective investigation, forensic procedures, etc.
