Ekal Vidyalaya of Dallas, a chapter of one of the foremost illiteracy eradication NGO's in the world, hosted a mesmerizing evening of music and melodies to raise public awareness and funds to provide primary education in rural and tribal areas of India.

Dallas, TX - August 31st, 2010

Ekal Vidyalaya of Dallas, a chapter of one of the foremost illiteracy eradication NGO's in the world, just completed an eclectic Public awareness campaign combined with a wonderful entertainment program for its patrons and donors. This successful event was held at the Eisemann Center Theater in Richardson, Texas on Friday, August 20th, 2010.

Swami Vivekanand once said, "If the poor boy cannot come to education, education must go to him". Inspired by his vision, Ekal Vidyalaya movement started in 1986 with 6 schools, now spread all over India to operating over 36,000 schools in remote parts of rural and tribal India where children have limited to no access to effective primary education. Partnering with several NGOs to impart education at regional/local level, Ekal Vidyalaya is now educating over 800,000 children. Ekal Vidyalaya' means One teacher school, and is unique in that each of its schools' curriculum is tailored to the needs of the villages and rural areas it serves, by utilizing local teachers, using the local language as its medium of instruction, and setting the school's schedule based on local needs and holidays.

Ekal is the largest Non Governmental organization(NGO) of its kind anywhere in the world, and has had a meaningful contribution in bumping up the literacy rate from 11% during India's independence in 1947, to 66% today. It recognizes that India still has a whopping 34% illiteracy that needs addressed, and has set its sight on increasing the number of its One teacher Ekal' schools from its current 31,000 to 100,000 by the year 2020.

Sanjeevani, a well-known bollywood singer and first SaReGaMa award winner, subtly conveyed the message to 800+ audiences of why basic education is critical for every child, and what least we can do to help uplift villages in India. Dr. Kishor Fruitwala, the President of Ekal Southwest Region said "Sanjeevani profoundly conveyed the importance of basic education to forgotten children during her performance that kept audience spell-bound for 3 hours". She sang old melodies Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil, Barsaat Mein, to new hits like Teri Ore, Zoobi Zoobi, Mhare Hivde; and her own popular songs Chori Chori Jab Nazrein Milli, O Yara rab rus - just to name a few.

"When you support a school, you not only provide basic education to children, you uplift an entire village. Along-with children, their parents and adults learn as well that slowly and certainly uplifts the entire village thru better awareness, hygiene, and empowerment", said Kalpana Fruitwala, the president of Ekal's Dallas Chapter.

Dr. Arti Gupta, The secretary and MC of the show was enthusiastic to see flawless execution of the event and quipped "our months of hard-work is bearing fruit today". Vigyan Gotewal, Vice President of Ekal Dallas, thanked Sanjeevani and supporters and said, "Such a melodious voice is god's gift that is earned only after decades of meditation".

Deepak Ahuja, a committee member was energetic saying, "Dallas has the best audience in the world. They love music and care for good cause. We are confident that we will not only meet, we will exceed our goal this year"

Simi Gotewal, the Youth Club president and Tanisha Gupta, the Kids club president resonated their feelings about less-fortunate "cousins" back home. It was impressive to see in their presentations how much these little ambassadors have helped spread awareness of Ekal's mission.

All the performances were breathtaking to watch," according to Dr. Pallavi Chavda, a generous long time patron and a member of the Ekal Dallas Advisory Board.

Other committee members Nisha Shah, Dr. Sujata Bhushan, Suruchi Jain, Sharda Rawat, and Dhiren Kuntawala showed their leadership and passion by working tirelessly towards the event. Rajni Patel, and Shalini Joshi members of the Ekal Dallas Advisory Board were very pleased with the "Success of the event and the awareness that it created in the Dallas Fort Worth Area, by bringing different sections of the community together." Dr. Nandlal Singh and Sashi Kejriwal, also on Ekal Dallas Advisory Board was impressed by Sanjeevani's talents and her dedication to Ekal cause. They remarked that Sanjeevani's performance has helped Ekal Dallas raise awareness and donation this year

The total donations received from the Dallas-Fort Worth community is expected to fund well over 500 schools, which translates to about six percent of the 8,200 schools funded by Ekal USA. The response from the 900 strong audience members was that of outpouring support. Ekal Dallas succeeded in collecting $38,400 worth of pledges at the gala itself, which, at $365 per school, translates to 100 new Ekal schools. "The Ekal Dallas chapter's total contribution this year will lead to about 15,000 new kids being rescued from the clutches of Darkness and Illiteracy," said Dr. Kishor Fruitwala, Southwest Regional President of Ekal USA.

Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of USA, including its Dallas chapter, is a registered 501c(3) non-profit organization. It strives to eradicate illiteracy in India, through non-formal, need based education strictly in villages and remote areas, specifically tailored to the village involved.
