Electrician - How To Hire One

Evaluate the job at hand

Evaluate the job at hand. Are you adding an addition to your home, or is it a repair? You'll want to be able to explain exactly what need to be done to your candidates.

Figure out if you will be expanding or adding outlets to your existing system. In general, adding outlets during a renovation is quite easy and inexpensive. Know what you want ahead of time.

Start your search by asking close friends and neighbors for recommendations. Word of mouth is the best way to find quality workers. Chances are, you know of someone who has had a good experience in the past. Find that person and gather contact information. In addition, you may want to check online to check reviews of contractors in your area.

Once you have a list of candidates, call a few to have them out to the site. Provide them with all the specification of the job at hand and ask for a written estimate of the costs.

Make sure you're aware of whether or not the electrician is licensed and insured. Never hire someone without either of these. Also find out their experience level, specialties, and education.

Ask each candidate for a list of references and contact them. Inquire as to whether these past customers were satisfied with the work that was done and if they'd hire them again.

Take all the information you've obtained and evaluate it. Compare prices, experience, and your overall impressions of the candidates. Choose the best option for the job and contact them to schedule a date for the job.

Make sure to review the job specifics to discuss any additional tasks or ideas you may have forgotten.

Put together a contract outlining the work that will be required, the cost, payment information, completion date, and any other aspects regarding the job.
