Electronic Cigarette Users Etiquette
So much of the e-cigarette conversation centers on the nuts and bolts aspects
, like what electronic cigarette cartridges contain and how e-cigs are different from analog cigarettes. While subjects like the lower cost, elimination of unpleasant smoke odor and reduced consumer waste are important, there is another consideration new vapers should think about: etiquette.
Smokers have gotten a bad rap for years, for obvious reasons in some cases, but also because some smokers tend to be inconsiderate with their habits, and sometimes militant about their right to do so. As the culture of vaping takes shape, it is important that electronic cigarette users take care to protect the reputation of these products.
You can smoke anywhere . . . if you have permission
Electronic cigarettes are becoming widely accepted and openly welcome in places all over the U.S. Many cities have even enacted statutes over the past couple of years that explicitly allow e-cigarette use in places where traditional smoking in banned.
If you enter a business establishment and they have signs posted stating that e-cigs are welcome, an increasingly common sight these days, then you have nothing to worry about and should feel free to vape away with abandon. If signs are not posted, however, then you need to ask. More importantly, be prepared to respond graciously if the answer is "no".
Yes, you know for a fact that e-cig vapor and secondhand smoke are not even in the same league and that unless otherwise stated, "no smoking" rules do not apply to you, but a business owners preferences take precedence in these situations. They are not allowed to discriminate against protected classes, but electronic cigarette users are not a protected class.
It falls under the same category as the good old, "no shirt, no shoes, no service" rule many businesses have. A business owner has every right to tell you to put your e-cigarette away, and if you argue that fact, you not only make yourself look bad, but you affect public perception of e-cigarette users on the whole.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should also respect the wishes of the owners of every private residence you visit.
Keep your e-cig vapor to yourself
Yes, you and anyone else who is willing to read about electronic cigarettes should be aware that e-cig vapor and secondhand smoke are worlds apart, but you should still be careful not to blow your vapor in peoples faces.
This falls under the same line as the reasons people wear deodorant. Making others smell things they did not ask to smell is just flat out rude. Think about the last time you were in an office or a store and someone came through wearing too much perfume. Now realize that if you intentionally blow your vapor in someone elses face you are just like the perfume people. Just because you find a smell pleasant does not mean everyone will.
When using your electronic cigarette around others, just be polite
It all really comes down to the fact that with any new technology the early adopters form an impression of the culture as a whole. It is the same reason Apple has a reputation of being a "hipster" company.
Just treat others as you would want to be treated when you vape, and you can enjoy your e-cigs while also creating a positive public image of electronic cigarette users.
