Emergency First Aid Kits When You Need Them
Emergency First Aid Kits When You Need Them
Every home should have emergency first aid kits for those little emergencies that come up from time to time. Some kits can be purchased already fitted out with bandages and tape and some even have treatments for pain. They come in different sizes and from different manufacturers, usually those who make the supplies in the first place. First aid kits can be found at drug stores, super markets and other retail establishments. They can also be located online when you are seriously shopping for a kit that will fit into your family's needs.
While many of these emergency first aid kits can be found with everything that would be needed in a small emergency situation, most only provide only the basics. So, what should be in emergency first aid kits anyway? We'll take a look and see.
1. Sanitizing products such as alcohol wipes for scrapes and cuts
2. Bandages and tape to cover open cuts and scrapes
3. Splints for broken limps or appendages
4. Antibiotic ointments of creams to soothe abrasions
5. Benadryl for allergic reactions
6. Pain relievers
7. A first aid guide
First aid kits guides should contain instructions that will help you know how to use the supplies that are in the kit. For instance, even though most people know how to place a band aid on a small cut, they may not know that the cut should first be cleaned and an ointment applied prior to putting the cover in place. Others may not know that when a bug bite begins to swell that is a signal that an allergic reaction may be taking place. Giving a Benadryl tablet or spreading Benadryl ointment on the bite can soothe the irritation and possible prevent an anaphylactic reaction.
Another first aid measure that should be taken whenever a scrape or abrasion takes place is to use an alcohol pad or saline solution to clean the scrape and then apply ointment and cover with a bandage. For a possible broken appendage, a splint will provide support until the victim can be taken to the physician for x-rays. To do this you will need something straight and strong on either side of the area. For a finger a Popsicle stick will serve will for this. However, a broken leg or arm will require a splint that is much larger.
If you do not have room in your emergency first aid kits, you could carry a couple of yard sticks in your vehicle to have handy, or something to cut a tree limb to serve the purpose. Medical tape and gauze can be used to wrap around the injured digit or appendage and splint to hold it securely until medical personnel has time to arrive or you can escort them to the hospital.
Whether you purchase your emergency first aid kits from a local supplier or an online source, the main thing to remember is to make sure to have it with you wherever you go. You just never know when you will need a good first aid kit.
