Emotional freedom techniques for Word blindness: Part 1
Dyslexia - or "Word Blindness" - is a developmental state that interferes with the acquisition of written language
. It is also a neurological condition in which the brain of the dyslexic shows distinct differences from "normal" children. EFT is very useful in addressing and releasing the core issues creating the condition in the first place.
"Tricia" (not her real name), arrived with dyslexia, which had interfered with her full enjoyment of life ever since she could remember - at college, in her employment as well as in the family unit. Tricia wa ready to try anything - including EFT!
Word blindness affects both reading and processing, so we decided on a course of EFT sessions, each dealing with different aspects of the condition. This article, Part 1, and the next one, Part 2, are shortened accounts of the way Tricia's Dyslexia was approached.
Tricia selected several situations she recalled from school, in Maths and English classes.
We have all been there in the maths class: you get more marks from the working out than for getting the answer right. The step by step sequence of the working out is a real challenge for dyslexics, who tend to know the answer instinctively and, in view of the fact that the "working out" is unconscious, they do not, if truth be told, understand how they got there. The result is they are often accused of "cheating". The anxiety of the whole situation builds cumulatively throughout school life.
The first part of the session, therefore, dealt with the difficulty of breaking the process up into steps and the teacher's attitude to her difficulty:
"Even though miss said Tricia, you're making this too complicated and I have to agree with her because even one step is too complicated! "
The maths teacher had apparently been quite sympathetic to Tricia's difficulties, unlike the English teacher, who had been, from Tricia's point of view, thoroughly unpleasant.
"Even though sir took my work, screwed it up into a ball and threw it across the room . "
"Even though that English descriptive piece was not complicated enough for sir "
The dyslexic subconscious leap can be actually incredibly valuable in adult life - who would not want to calculate their cheque book so easily? Tricia had by now begun to appreciate how much she appreciated and relied on her intuitive dyslexic talents, so we did a little thankfulness Tapping:
"Even though my teachers didn't understand my intuitive leaps - and neither did I I do now "
"I really appreciate my subconscious for doing all the work for me"
"I'm so grateful that my subconscious is so clever "
By the end of the session, Tricia's ability to learn lists and to retain them in order had improved dramatically. By the following week, Tricia was really excited that she and her brother had spent some quality time having fun - they had not argued once! This, together with being able to recall shopping lists and directions to new places was obviously improving her self respect in surprising ways.
