Energy Star Tax Incentives
The United States government has caught on to the fact that consumers want Energy Star appliances
, and the government is willing to help you pay for upgrades in your home that are energy-efficient and can lower your carbon footprint.
If you are installing new insulation in your home, the government offers a tax credit for 30% of the cost of Energy Star insulation. If you're installing new windows and doors, you can get several tax credits. For exterior windows and skylights, the government will give you a tax credit of 30% of the cost, and the same credit is offered for storm windows, exterior doors, and storm doors.
A metal or asphalt
Energy Star roof will get you another 30% tax credit (although asphalt roofs are the worst option if you're looking to lighten your load on the environment). You'll also get a tax credit of 30% of the cost of central air conditioning systems, air source heat pumps, natural gas furnaces, propane furnaces, oil furnaces, hot water boilers that are fueled by gas, propane, or oil, and advanced main air circulating fans.
You can also get the same tax credit (30% of the cost of the appliance) for water heaters, whether powered by electricity, gas, oil, or propane. Biomass stoves also yield the same tax credit, as do geo-thermal heat pumps. Geo-thermal heat pumps, though, are among the few appliances that do not have a cap on the credit. For all other appliances the government will give you a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $1,500.
Solar water heating systems and photovoltaic systems, like
geo-thermal heat pumps, and small wind energy systems and wind turbines also lack a tax credit cap. If you're looking to create your own energy with solar or wind, taking advantage of government assistance can make it a much more affordable option than before.
Do your research before you buy, though, since not all appliances fit into the tax credit criteria, even if they carry the Energy Star label. These tax credits are set to expire on Dec. 31st, 2010, so jump on these great incentives before they expire. The Energy Star website reminds consumers to save receipts and the Manufacturer Certification Statement to ensure getting your
tax credits successfully.
Finally, because government assistance is given in the form of a tax credit, you'll have to wait until you file your taxes next year to get the benefit. Hang on to all of your receipts and Manufacturer Certification Statements, then, when you do your taxes in the spring, use IRS Tax Form 5695 to claim your credits. Energy Star tax credits are a great way to go.
