Eu Backing For Higher Education In Europe

Planning to pursue your master's and doctoral programmes in Europe and that too with

liberal funding to boot, then Erasmus Mundus programme should set one on their way.

A flagship programme of the European Union (EU), it supports academic excellence and promotes Europe's higher education worldwide and fosters cooperation with developing nations with the objective of contributing to their development.

The Erasmus Mundus has been successfully offering scholarships to students across the globe since 2006 and the masters programme covers a wide variety of areas including economics and management, engineering and technology, law and policy, materials science, health science, communication, education, humanities, environmental sciences, and so on. Nearly 200 European universities are on board in offering this programme.

Vina Vaswani, secretary, Erasmus Mundus Alumni Indian Chapter (EMAI), who has done her MA in Bio-Ethics under the Erasmus Mundus programme told reporters here on Monday that students who opt for the master's or doctoral programmes receive liberal funding of up to Euro 1,500. This amount varies per programme and is good enough amount for one to pursue their education while having a decent life style in Europe.

A student sometimes has to hop to more than two universities to complete their master's programme, Vaswani, who completed her course from universities in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Italy, said. The programme duration varies for each course and the universities too switch programmes they offer each year. This funding (of approximately 1,500 Euros) is made available exclusively to non-European students, she pointed.

Those interested in learning more about the Erasmus Mundus programme may attend a half-day promotional programme at the indoor auditorium of Yenepoya University at Deralakatte near here on Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm. Sulabha Karunanidhi, EMAI president will address the students on the programme. Registration is compulsory and opens at 9 am.
