Evaluating Waste Water Management Systems
Evaluating Waste Water Management Systems
There is little recognition given to waste water management even if modern and ancient societies relied heavily on this particular element. Through the years, a lot of communities grew as the people went out of their way to find more effective ways of gathering and treating water. As nations progress, more and more scientific and technological advances occur.
This is what led to the growth of waste water management processes. In ancient Rome where the marvelous aqueducts were built, the first ever manuscript on basic waste water management was found. Saying that a part of the Roman water supply should be reserved for cleaning the city and the sewers, a Roman statesman by the name of Frontinus wrote this treatise.
The subject was treated seriously after the discovery of certain bacteria strains in the 1600s by a Dutch scientist named Anthony van Leeuwenhoek. People started to get a greater grasp on sanitation and its importance in maintaining the general health of the community. In the 1800s, London, an English city decided to work on sewers that solved many public health concerns and these were developed during that time.
When it comes to an effective waste water management system, this was very important at the time and this is what led other developing cities to follow what London did. It was during 1942 when the reputed Lindley designed an engineered management system that was laid out in Hamburg in Germany. Working by managing industrial and household waste water was this German system.
Headed by a notable engineer named Chesborough in the city of Chicago, America designed a comprehensive sewage system in the 1850s. Here, London was experiencing an outbreak of cholera during this time. After the outbreak, it was dubbed the Broad Street Pump Affair because the cause for the problem was the contamination of one of the system's pumps.
As societies around the world progressed, more researches and scientists contributed in the studies of effective waste water management. What Robert Koch, a German physician and microbiologist, found out was that germs and bacteria can potentially causes diseases. The study was labeled by him as the 'Germ Theory of Disease'.
Further research on the study of disinfection was done by Joseph Lister. Able to discover the process of antiseptic surgery was this British surgeon. When it comes to waste water management, he also applied his study on sterilization.
In prevention of previous outbreaks, our waste water management systems should be made more sufficient not to mention more sophisticated too. Most of the people affected during the previous outbreaks were infected by dysentery, cholera, and typhoid fever. Such outbreaks were terrible and they gave the affected societies a hard lesson in sanitation.
We might not realize it but we are really fortunate. The world we have today is a very convenient one because we can make use of modern sewage systems and indoor plumbing. When it comes to the waste water management systems that we have today, these are more sophisticated than those used in the past but more studies are being conducted still.
Thanks to our industrial and technological growth, more concerns about the environment are being noted. Normally, people blame issues like global warming and climate change on our actions, direct or indirect. When it comes to the current state of our planet, there is room for hope considering that new developments are being made with regard to eco-friendly ways of waste water management.
