Expanding Yourself

When you insert a 64GBSDCX card into a device such as a netbook

, a camera or an MP3 player you then 'expand' it's memory meaning that it is now capable of storing a whole lot more information than it was previously. This then drastically increases the capacity of that device and this means you can play more games and install programmes that otherwise simply would not fit on your harddrive (particularly in the case of a smartphone). It means you can have a huge library of pictures or of music and not ever worry about the phone or netbook running out of space and not allowing you to put any more on. In that way, a 64GB SDCX actually increases the power of the device and can be enough to upgrade it into a higher end piece of technology. Thanks to the low price tag on most memory cards this is all possible at a low price and means that you can make a cheap device much more powerful without spending loads. Take a look at the price difference between an 8GB iPhone and a 16GB iPhone several hundred dollars. Sadly they don't support SD cards, but in other devices you can increase the capacity of your device from 8 to 64GB for far less than half the price.

In a way then, when you carry an SD card on you you actually expand your own memory. This is a very interesting concept and a transhuman one that demonstrates how we can already use technology to increase our abilities. Interestingly the human brain is currently estimated at being around 10 terabytes. As a terabyte is 1024 gigabytes, this means that incredibly a 64GB SDCX card has 1/16th of the storage space that our brains do but is only the size of our finger nail. If you could put a memory card directly into your brain then, you could improve your long term memory by almost 1% - which would make an incredibly noticeable difference.

This unfortunately isn't the case, but if you think of your eyes and ears as an 'SD' slot the conduit between your brain and your card then this is how you can upload stored information from the card. At the same time using something like a netbook, you can type down ideas and thoughts and save them onto the memory card so that you don't need to remember them yourself. Again this frees you up and means you have more storage space to yourself. You carry a memory card with you, and you have an additional 1% of the information your brain could possibly store meaning entire novels and books.

Most importantly though a memory card such as a 64GB SDCX works differently to our brains in its encoding. With our brains it's very abstract and we don't have precise control over how we save data or what gets deleted. That means that this extra 1% is actually much more easily accessible and versatile than our brains. It's only a matter of time until we get slots in our ears...
