Built in the late 70s by Dr. Arvind Bhatanagar the USO has been modeled after the solar observatory in Big Bear Lake, Southern California making it one of the best equipped institutions for solar activity in the region.

Being one of only a handful of solar observatories located on an island, the USO offers ideal conditions for solar observation as air turbulence does not interfere with the sharpness of solar images in an island atmosphere. Solar observatories on main lands on the other hand regularly deal with increased levels of air turbulence which distort images of the sun with less quality. The USO is also fortunate to be located in Rajasthan which enjoys cloud free, clear skied days nearly all year round affording the observatory unhindered, top quality views of the sun throughout the year.

Home to some of the world most advanced solar observation equipment and high powered telescopes the USO recently added the 'Solar Vector Magnetograph' to its already impressive collection of instruments. The massive longitudinal gap between Australia and Spain is virtually monopolized by the USO which frequently collaborates with Global Oscillations Network Group for international programs. Visitors can witness the use of USOs many telescopes in exploring the development of solar active regions, mass ejections and solar flares while guests can also view the suns magnetic field, spectral elements and the observatorys special prowess in monitoring high-resolution solar chromospheric velocity.
