Facebook Trying To Take On Craigslist With New Marketplace Section

Craigslist has been the one-stop for anyone searching for local classified ads

, for several years. With a span of more than 50 countries, Craigslist is a classified ads website with a range of categories related to the housing service, jobs, and many more. A large number of websites like Craigslist have popped up recently namely Backpages, but none of them have made dominance similar to Craigslist in the classifieds industry. Although, if rumours will turn to be true, Facebook could give a run to the classified ads site for its money.

Two sources within Facebook have disclosed to The Daily that the social networking giant is testing a new service which is said to be make Craigslist dead. The social networking firm has entered, into a classified ads project, to engage users and also for users to engage each other.

Suspiciously known as 'Marketplace', here users will be able to make brief adverts, which will be displayed in their friends' news feed. Similar to the classified ads website, the categories will range from rentals, apartments to job boards and furniture sales. Marketplace share few similarities with Facebook's own 'promoted posts'. A nominal fees of less than US dollar five will earn you a little ad in your contacts' feeds. For example, if you are searching for a buyer for your used computer, you may post an ad on Facebook and may find a friend who may be looking for the same.

However, contrary to Facebook's 'promoted posts', Marketplace ads will also allow you to include multiple images and links to external resources or sites. In addition, users can also select to share a post on their timeline similarly how they share news. A good thing is housing ads will be free, and users will also be allowed to tag friends as suggestion.

According to the report of The Daily, for instance, you were searching for a roommate in the Seattle area who enjoys sushi and is a neat freak. Post the ad on Facebook Marketplace, and it would be shown to friends in the Puget sound area. Those friends could pass it to others across the country even if they are not your friends (original poster of the ad). So, it sounds a clever way to get users load more pages as well as a great way to expand online social circles.

There will also be a Projects section similar to the Gigs section in Craigslist, which will enable users to share information and tips on various topics from 'clearing a brush to working with WordPress'. These are just early days, but the Project just serve great for the next generation.

Facebook's Marketplace service is targeting on users' contacts instead of adopting the approach of Craigslist. In simple words, instead of selling an item, product, or service to strangers, you can more effectively sell it to your known or those who might be interested in buying the item.

It is great to hear that the social networking firm is taking a positive step with an attempt to utilize its resources while exploring the options.
