Parenting Guide For A New Mum
Becoming a mum for the first time can be overwhelming and daunting at first
. Even the smallest tasks might seem colossal and you can feel that life as you know it will never be the same again. Here are some tips on how to survive those first few weeks, and remember, having a newborn baby is the most demanding time of all in parenting and it will only get easier.
Be prepared:
Cook and freeze a selection of meals ready for when the baby arrives. Between feeding, nappy changes and sleeps, preparing a three course meal will be the last thing on your mind.
Sleep whenever possible:
It is important to try to sleep, or at least rest, when your newborn baby naps. You need to keep up your energy and strength otherwise it is easy to become over exhausted.
Leave the housework:
While you dont want your home to become a hovel, keeping on top of the ironing pile or vacuuming everyday shouldnt be on the top of your priority list. Letting things slide for a while wont hurt in these early days of parenting.
Accept help:
Dont be afraid to accept help if offered. Whether it is having a meal cooked, washing clothes, clearing up the kitchen or watching the newborn baby while you rest, any extra support can ease this busy time.
Support networks:
It can be very supportive and reassuring to spend time with other new mums who are all in the same boat as you. It is also a great opportunity to ask any questions you might have as no doubt they will have been there too and know exactly what you are going through.
Me time:
It is important not to become completely consumed with being a mother. You are still the same person so try and give yourself a little me time in the week, whether it is a long soak in the bath, a quick pedicure, or meeting a friend for coffee.
Get out and about:
While it might feel easier to stay at home with everything you need within easy reach, getting out for some fresh air can boost your confidence and give you a much-needed change of scene. Even if it is a quick walk round the block with the pram, mixing with other people and seeing that life is still going on outside your four walls will do wonders to your morale.
Keep your perspective:
While it might feel that you are going to be changing nappies and having sleepless nights forever, try to remember that this is only a short period of your life and pretty soon you will have this parenting business off to a fine art. Before you know it, you will be waving your little one off to school and remembering fondly those first few precious months together.
