Federal Debt Help - How The Best Debt Settlement Services Will Survive The New Laws

Since the recession has hit the economies of many countries of the world

, bankruptcies and the burden of credit card debts have also risen tremendously. As more and more people are now opting for debt settlement programmers both the government and financial institutions are helping consumers to relieve them from the burden of debt by relaxing the laws of debt settlement procedures. The new laws made by financial institutions and government are encouraging more and more people to settle their credit card debts instead of declaring bankruptcy.

The creditors are left with no choice but to agree to the terms of debt relief services hired by the debtors to eliminate their debt problems. These debt settlement companies negotiate with the creditors on the consumer's behalf by charging a fee and as more and more people are coming forward to take advantage of the services of debt settlement companies, many fake companies have come up that are charging exuberant fees without negotiating settlements. Thus, to protect the interest of consumers, a new set of rules and regulations have been introduced by the Federal Trade Commission.

The Federal Department has put a ban on upfront fees so that debt settlement companies cannot charge any fees from the consumer unless a settlement is reached between the creditor and the consumer. Furthermore, the rule also states that the fee charged for one debt to any consumer when a settlement is reached must be in proportion to entire fee charged in case if all debts were settled. This will stop the debt relief groups from charging upfront fees for multiple debts in one debt relief program. The new rules also include that consumers are provided with certain necessary information before they enroll in a debt relief program. The consumers should be conveyed how long the settlement process will actually take and if any potential negative aspects are related with registering in a particular debt relief program.

Any misrepresentation or fake and bogus claims regarding its services by debt relief companies are also prohibited under the new rules of the Federal department. Thus these rules clearly indicate to the debt relief companies that they have to be very cautious when providing services to the consumers for negotiating with their creditors.

If you have over $10,000 in unsecured debt it may be a wise financial decision to consider a debt settlement.
