Ferret Tips: Your New Ferret

You have done some research and have decided a ferret is the pet for you

. They would be an endearing addition to your life and to your home. These cute cuddly animals can be trained to use a litter box. But before you allow your new ferret run free about the house, youll have to take a few precautions.

Your new ferret should not be let loose in the home right away. Let it get used to its surroundings from the protection and comfort of its cage. Give the ferret some time to adjust before you consider letting it roam outside its cage. Teaching your ferret how to use the litter box is important, you do not want them leaving you little presents around the house. Litter box training may take several hours a day for up to several months. The more time that you devote to it, the more likely it is that you will have a litter box trained ferret. Depending on your ferret and how much attention you give the litter training process, most ferrets end up using the litter box about 75% of the time. Some ferrets will use the litter box every time but, with most, you might find a present in the house from time to time. The best way to begin litter box training is to let your ferret run around a small room like a bathroom first.

Usually ferrets will go within within the first few minutes of waking up or just after they eat. So, when your ferret first awakens, place it in the litter box. Do not allow it to leave the little box until it has gone to the bathroom. Once it has gone, immediately give your ferret a treat. The goal is to try to encourage that kind of of behavior by rewarding the ferret with a treat. Therefore making it a positive and encouraging experience. There should be any physically punishment for a ferret for any reason, especially if they have an accident in the house. Using physical punishment will only make them afraid of you and they will not associate their behavior with that kind of punishment. You must be prepared to occasionally clean up after them if you want them to be able to run around the house.

You must also ferret proof you house to make it safe for them to roam around freely. They are small and curious creatures and will make their way into small spaces. A good rule of thumb is that if their head will fit into a space, their bodies will too. Begin to ferret proof by first getting down on you hands and knees and crawling around looking for any small holes, crevices, loose ventilation covers, etc. Be sure to explore every room the you will allow the ferret to roam. Appliances also need to be checked for small holes or places that ferrets can get inside of. Because ferrets are curious animals that are very good climbers, anything has the potential to be a play area for ferrets. Ferrets are able to get up into some types of refrigerators and could potentially get injured on the fan. Be aware that the dryer tubing also looks like a really fun tube for a ferret and they may tear a hole in it and get outside through the vent. Some couches can also be the cause of danger. Keep in mind that some ferrets can get through the thin lining underneath some couches and up inside to the springs.

Some ferret owners would love to give their ferrets the freedom to run around the house and get exercise. But, the most important thing is that you are able to provide a safe place for your new ferret to roam and enjoy.
