An expanded real-world experience is the primary aim of any educational trip. Be it a field trip in the immediate vicinity or an international trip, travel teaches in lasting ways. Field trips take the curriculum from the books and extend it to life, enriching the quality of learning. Trips provide the ultimate audio visual experience a living laboratory outside the confines of a classroom. Direct contact with a life situation teaches students in more effective ways than theoretical classroom teaching can. This opens up numerous learning opportunities not only where academics is concerned but also with regard to community and self-awareness.

Field trips expand children's awareness of their own community.Trips to fire station, public libraries and offices, veterinary clinics help young children develop appreciation and respect for community workers and encourage them to become champions of better community living.

Trips usually begin with a sound briefing on good manners, politeness and courtesy. Socially acceptable graces while interacting with a new set of adults and possibly children teach students to employ more self-control because it is a less controlled and more varied environment than the classroom. Besides field trips help improve bonding among the students as they experience the field trip together. Disagreements arising from individual and group interactions in a natural social situation provide with the challenge of resolving such matters creatively and amicably.

In fact the word travel originates from travail, which is itself derived from the word tripalium, an ancient device that is synonymous with torture, agony and torment. In ancient times travel was deemed to be extreme hard work,a study which was capable of transforming the traveller into a knowledgeable, mature and wordly-wise person.

The most successful field trips are those which are conducted in a way which advances knowledge in an as unspoiled and untouched a manner as possible. This aspect fills children with enthuse which automatically readies and opens up their minds. Students rarely forget the fun they had or the lessons they learnt while going through the hands-on experience on being introduced to new environments.

Field trips can be effective in anchoring difficult information be it historical facts, biology, physics or chemistry. Retention is better with tangible knowledge as children are immersed in sensory activities like seeing, touching, working and exploring. This not only helps recall but also comprehension, bringing about a deeper understanding of the subject.

During field trips, students have a chance to independently go forth and absorb all the extra information they want and can.It teaches them to gather, filter and process information first hand. Infact in information processing and information handling are some of the most important skills in an information rich age like ours. Development of skills such as keen observation, correlating the subjects of the curriculum, application and verification of previously learnt information are all big learnings which happen most easily and rapidly.

At the end of trips students are encouraged to compile the lessons garnered on the field trip througheither presentations orreports or speech. A well planned and executed trip can be effective learning tool - like a portal, to the world outside the classroom.
