The tech has to be confident when instructing a pet owner. He or she has to confidently give instructions on how to administer medication to the animal and explain to the pet owner how to care for the pet once it is taken back home. The vet tech also is responsible for logging important information in patient files. She therefore needs good writing skills.

Much of the practical training involves the collecting and testing of specimen samples. Specimen testing is one of the major functions of the vet tech. The tech is also responsible for preparing an animal for surgery and also preparing the operating room. The tech will make sure the proper instruments are ready.

The vet tech is responsible in many cases for the dental prophylaxes. Teeth cleaning is a job handled by the experienced vet tech in many veterinary offices. Pet owners should bring in their pets for this important procedure at least once a year.
