Finding Social Events In Your New Area
Moving to a new area can be a lonely experience
. If it's a complete
removal from your old home then it's possible you'll know nobody at all. Don't be discouraged by your sudden lack of a social life. You'll never make new friends (or even casual acquaintances) by staying at home. Get out there and socialise as soon as you can. Being involved in a community can be a rewarding experience. There's no better way to meet the people in your new neighbourhood than by attending social gatherings. A social event can be anything involving groups of people and can be easily taken advantage of. If you're aching to make new friends and be included in a community, more often than not a simple greeting during a social gathering is plenty to get the ball rolling. When people congregate they naturally become more open, as they know they're expected to interact with their neighbours; they have their public personas. What better time to include yourself? Here's a few places to look:
Markets. Find out if your area has any markets or fares coming up. This could range from regular weekly markets to the occasional craft fare. Markets are a great place to meet people at their sociable finest. Not only will you meet many of your neighbours here, you'll also see what some of them may do for a living. If your area has no markets to speak of, strike up a conversation with local shop owners. They'll give you the time of day as a matter of course, and you'll show them that you're friendly and approachable.
Local noticeboard. Most communities will have one of these, either outside a church, library or community centre. You may not expect to find anything that suits you on such a noticeboard, but you'd be surprised at what's tacked up here. Noticeboards are launchpads for social events, and are often aimed at people such as yourself, trying to find new friends and experiences.
Pub quiz nights. Most pubs will have a weekly quiz night. Pubs are great places to meet people - they're made for socialisation. Head along as a couple or just by yourself. You may be able to join a team just by showing up on the night. Give it a try - you might just end up being the hero of the night! If no such nigh exists, make a point of becoming weekly regulars at the bar and strike up a conversation with the barman or publican.
Night classes. Kill two birds with one stone by learning something you've always wanted and meeting new people. Take up ballroom dancing, learn to speak French or give kung fu a try. Night classes rely on people such as yourself, trying to get out and meet new people as well as learn new skills. It's likely that the majority of your current friends were made at school or University. Anywhere where people go to learn people naturally socialise.
Your average community will have a hidden network of socialisation that you can choose to plug into to whatever depth you feel comfortable with. There may be a social club for people in your situation that you can join. But by far the best option is to organically meet people during social occasions.
