Finding The Area Of Coaching That's Best For You
Coaching as a career can be a daunting one
Coaching as a career can be a daunting one. It is a subject that can cover anything from business to sports, from education to starting a family. With such a wide and varying set of disciplines to work in, it is then important to ensure that you know where your own strengths lie and what it is you are going to specialise in. This is of course easier for some than others based on their previous experiences or jobs, but it is still a choice all coaches should look to make sooner rather than later.
When you are new to coaching it can be a difficult choice, deciding which area or niche to specialise in. A common factor is that people don't want to be too specialised as they fear it may restrict business and reduce the size of the market they can aim for. The size of the market does reduce, but you will suddenly find you become a very relevant player in a smaller market, as opposed to a general player in a massive market.
Marketing plays a big role in all areas of business and coaching is no different. The best thing for a coach who has found their niche is that they can then construct a marketing plan aimed at the most relevant people. This makes the marketing process more efficient and as a result much more cost effective in the long run.
With a marketing plan defined, the next step is to put it into action and start to work on building a client list. Being in a niche area will mean that you can target specific areas that cater for your potential clients. For example, business coaches may target conferences and trade shows for small businesses, whereas sports coaches may target sports clubs and gyms. These efforts can be very effective, and are almost impossible if you haven't defined a niche for yourself as a coach.
The other big advantage of specialising in a specific area of coaching is that you will be directly catering for the needs of your prospective clients. Most people will look to have coaching in one particular area of their life, be it home, business or sports. These are potential clients that may be lost or put-off if you don't market yourself and your skill set as something that will meet their needs - it can be rare to find someone who simply wants a 'coach'.
Finding the right niche for you can really take your coaching career to the next level but is also an important step in knowing the market you will be coaching in. By researching different niches you may find a more profitable or relevant area of coaching you may have previously missed or that the one you had planned on working in was not as viable as you first thought. Get specific, use your skills in the right way and move your coaching on to the next level.
