Finding The Right Niche Keyword

It doesn't matter what niche you are targeting

, there are certain qualities that make some keywords better than others. If you're trying to make money, you're going to want to target the keywords that are further along in the buyer cycle. If you want to reach the most people with the least amount of effort, you'll need to target under-served keywords. And if you want your message to hit home, you have to know what the searcher was thinking when he typed the word into his favorite search engine. Getting these things right isn't always easy, but when you do, the difference is incredible.

Every product or service has a typical buyer cycle. That cycle includes some preliminary research, narrowing of options, and finally making a buying decision. If you want to make money in your niche, you either need to help a prospect through all of these stages, or you need to target prospects in the final phase of this cycle.

You can do that by understanding the difference in the keywords these prospects will use. An example would be someone who wants to lose weight. They may start by typing in a generic keyword phrase like "lose weight". This person isn't looking to buy, he is window shopping and considering options.

However, the person who types in the more specific phrase "cabbage soup diet review" has decided he would like to try this diet and wants to know if it works. This second searcher is much further along in the buying cycle, and may decide to buy a book about the cabbage soup diet if he finds credible information that it can work.


Along with where a keyword falls into the buying cycle, another important consideration when looking for a good keyword to target for your niche is the competition that already targets this specific phrase. If there are already hundreds or thousands targeting this specific keyword, or if the top 10 or 20 search results are authority sites for the niche, you should consider targeting different phrases.

Figuring out the strength of your competition for a keyword is a topic that could take up an entire book, but looking at the first page or two of search results can tell you a lot that can help you determine if it is worth your effort to try competing for search rankings. One important factor to consider is the on-page indications. Does the title include the targeted phrase? Is the content specific to that search phrase?

Beyond the on-page factors, you should look at the number of incoming links and the pagerank (PR) for the specific pages ranked in the search results. If these sites have a high PR score and lots of links, they may be more difficult to compete with for top search results. If the competition doesn't seem to be that strong, then you've probably found a quality niche keyword phrase.


The most important factor to consider is what the searcher is thinking. Understanding that a person looking for a product review will often type in "[product name] review" or something similar to this may seem obvious, but still many people would target this keyword phrase with something that is not an actual review. Put yourself in the searcher's shoes and try to understand what they want. If you can do that, it becomes almost impossible to fail.

So when you go looking for the right keyword phrase to attract prospects in your niche, be sure you determine where in the buying cycle the word fits, how strong your competition is, and what the prospect is really thinking. If you can do this, you'll have improved your chances of making some money considerably.
