Traditional wall lights can complete a room and really complement a chandelier or table lamp, but nowadays they are a bit more difficult to find. Most home and DIY shops tend to stock modern versions of lights, which are often mass produced. Many homeowners, particularly those that might describe themselves as slightly perfectionist, dislike this trend for mass produced, modern lighting as they tend to believe that modern and mass produced are synonyms for boring and poor quality. Whether or not this is true depends entirely on the quality of the manufacture, which of course varies from shop to shop. That's a topic for another day.

Traditional wall lights tend to bring to mind connotations of luxury, uniqueness and quality. Whilst this cannot be guaranteed for every dealer or manufacturer, this does often tend to be the case. Traditional wall lights are often chosen to complement existing lighting in a room and tend to be less common than modern designs, meaning that they are more likely to be unique and to create a talking point in a room.

But the question is, where to find traditional wall lights? Before embarking on a shopping trip, you have to make a decision about whether you would like to buy traditional wall lights in the antique sense or traditional style lights. The difference is that antiques are original fixtures, bought second hand. They are sometimes collectors' items, sold on at high prices in auctions and antiques fairs and if you have plenty of money to dedicate to your traditional wall lights then this is a great way of ensuring that you are going to get something a little bit unique and of good quality, which will probably keep its value well into the future. There are some problems associated with buying antique light fittings: often prohibitive cost being one. Other problems include the fact that you are limited to what dealers have been able to source, meaning that it could be difficult to buy a pair or a complete set. There is also the potential problem that older fixtures may not be suitable fits for modern energy saving light bulbs.

Traditional style lights tend to be newly made, using traditional methods, styles or materials. They are often very good quality and are generally much more affordable than antiques. They also have the advantage of being easily obtainable in sets, in most specialist lighting shops in most towns.
