Finger Pain? It Could Be Trigger Finger

If you are suffering from finger pain on a regular basis

, there is a reasonable chance that you will be suffering from trigger finger; a condition which affects the tendons which are in the hand. A condition which can affect any finger, it is most likely to be suffered in the thumb, ring finger or little finger. There are instances where more than one finger can be affected, whilst both hands could also be affected.

There are number of symptoms which could point to trigger finger. A common symptom is for a stiffness to be felt in the affected digit. This is something most likely to be felt in the morning. Likewise, when moving the affected finger or thumb, a clicking may be heard. There may also be what appears to be a small growth at the base of digit which is affected.

The most commonly experience symptom is finger pain of course. This can be felt independently of any other symptom, or in addition to them. At times, this can be quite severe, though for many it is nothing more than discomfort. The pain will most commonly be felt when moving the affected finger, though could also be felt as a constant ache. Touching the affected area is likely to elicit severe pain, often becoming agonizing. Over time, the condition could worsen, leading to the finger becoming stuck.

Treatment of the condition varies from person to person. This is due to differences regards the severity and longevity of the condition itself. Surgery is an effective solution to the issue, though most physicians will try other options available to them before heading down this path. The surgery is effective, but does require a slicing of the tendon and can be painful, though is performed without overnight admittance.

The first treatment a doctor is likely to recommend is complete resting of the hand. However, this is often not easy to do of course, and can be extremely debilitating. A likely course of action therefore will be to prescribe anti inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen.

Steroid Injections: If rest and medication is not effective, a course of steroidal injections could be tried. This is painful, and need repeat treatment, though does prove effective in the majority of cases. A corticosteroid solution will be injected directly into the tendon shaft, which will ease pain and inflammation, with a view to increasing overall mobility almost instantaneously. There can limitations to who is suitable however.

Corrective kits: Because of the pain and issues with regular treatment, many physicians are advising the use of kits which manipulate the fingers overnight. Working much like splints, these are worn when sleeping, with a view to alleviating pain and preventing the fist from curling and locking the fingers into position.
