Fire Control Measures For Warehouse Why And What
Large storage areas such as warehouses are high risk areas of fire break out given the kind of materials they store and areas they cover
. Fire control measures for such storage places should be stringent and strictly followed.
Warehouses stock up materials on closely kept racks. Most of the materials stored are either made of materials that offer low or no resistance to fire and also the plastic packaging in most cases increases the chances of even a controlled fire causing great amount of damage.
Preventing and effectively controlling any possible fire must be high on priority of management to prevent any loss of stored items and human life. Having a basic fire protection system is not the solution. Many times it is believed that if the installed system conforms to the safety test criterions and has some kind of fire detection and mitigation system in place it is capable of fighting the menace of any fire. But, the truth is, safety codes and procedures provide very basic coverage. Therefore, besides having a certified warehouse compound and state-of-the-art fire protection system - sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, VADs and other components to detect and control fire there are couple of more things that too must be kept in mind, they are :
Protect workforce against a fire break out
First thing that every manager should ensure that the staff working at the warehouse is trained to use fire extinguishers, they know what steps to take to control the fire without endangering their own well being. Fire extinguishers should be promoted as first-in-the-line tools to quickly douse a fire especially in its nascent stage.
Second, there should be an evacuation plan in place. In most warehouses space is most sought after. In many cases materials are plied from floor to roof, wall to wall, leaving little or no space for a quick movement. Many warehouses are fined for blocking the exits and not following the storage guidelines. It is very important that you follow all the guidelines and have an evacuation plan in place. Your staff should be trained and knowledgeable of which way would lead them to safety in case a fire turns ugly. These pre-emptive steps will not only save lives but it will also help reduce the loss for business if a fire erupts.
Updating Fire Protection system
Everyday there are new developments in the technology. Given the fact that warehouses at times stack up aerosols, flammable liquids, electronic items the choice of Fire detection and defense system becomes very critical. Equally critical is the media of fire suppression. You can choose from innumerable of media depending upon the type of items you stack up in your warehouse. The basic types are:
Foams
Water
Chemical powders
Below are a few misconceptions about warehouse fire safety.
Warehouse should pass a fire inspection therefore it must be up to code.
Warehouse should be up to code therefore it must be safe.
Warehouse should design with a sprinkler system therefore it can't burn down.
To summarise the above, every warehouse and large storage facility must do a regular Fire Risk Assessment, update its Fire protection and perform a maintenance check on the Fire extinguishers, alarms and prepare the staff.
