Daily checking must be done on bolts, locks and security instruments on fire exits, making sure that the escape doors open freely and close tightly and that the escape route should be free from any obstruction and combustible materials. The fire alarm system should also be checked daily for any malfunctions. Emergency lights should always be individually checked for working illumination and safety signs should be checked for cleanliness and legibility.
Following the manufacturer's instructions, weekly checking must be conducted on fire detection and monitoring systems and manual fire alarms. Even the batteries of flashlights must be checked weekly, including verifying the workability of fire extinguishers and fire hoses and fire hose cabinets. Fire pumps and other motor devices in the building should also be checked and run for at least for half an hour each week to confirm their workability.
Monthly tests should also be undertaken on emergency lighting system wirings and connections and these tests should strictly adhere to the installer's specifications. Fire doors should be repaired for any defects and damages, making sure that the said doors have intact frames and are properly sealed. Tests and checks done on a semi-annual or yearly basis must include the more complex fire protection systems and should be more comprehensive and detailed. As such, these tests must be conducted by licensed professional fire safety experts only.
