Five Features To Look For When Choosing An Electric Comb Binding Machine

Plastic comb binding is an easy way to finish off your documents and produce a great-looking book

. There are lots of comb binding machines available, including ones that are electric. The electric ones are great for organizations in which a lot of books are produced frequently because they work much more quickly than manual devices. If you've been thinking about getting an electric comb binder, you need to make sure the one you choose has the following five features.

1.) A large punching and binding capacity. The most important feature in a binding machine is definitely its punching and binding capacity. If the device can only punch a few sheets at a time, it will take forever to put together a long document and make producing a lot of them almost impossible. Therefore, choose a product that can punch a lot at once (i.e. 20+ sheets). Also, make sure the device can handle combs of varying thicknesses. Plastic combs range in thicknesses from 3/16" to 2" which can bind anywhere from 10 to 250 sheets. Having a device that can handle a lot of different combs will make it possible for you to bind both short and long books.

2.) Disengageable dies and depth of punch margin control. Although you'll probably be binding mostly letter-seized documents, there may come a time when you want to use a different size of paper, such as A4, half-letter, or legal-size. If that's the case, you need disengageable pins. What this means is you can tell the machine not to have a particular pin punch your paper, allowing you to punch smaller sheets with the right number of holes. (You'll also want to make sure the device has a large enough throat to accommodate your paper. An open throat will work as well.) Also, look for an adjustable depth of punch margin control. This feature enables you to choose the distance between the edge of the paper and your punched holes. Placing the holes at the right distance will keep the pages from being easily ripped out and it will make them easier to turn as well.

3.) Good construction. Electric comb binding machines are often expensive, so make sure you get your money's worth by choosing a device that's been well-constructed. In particular, look for a machine with metal components. Metal parts will always outlast plastic ones and devices containing them often tend to work better as well.

4.) Comfortable operation. You will also want to pick a product with which you'll feel comfortable, but will also help you stay productive. For example, some electric comb binders have punching mechanisms that are activated by hand, while others are activated by a foot pedal, kind of like a sewing machine. Using the foot pedal might feel awkward at first, but it will keep your hands free so you can get more done. However, if using a foot pedal feels wrong, choose a machine with a manually activated punch.

5.) A reasonable price and an adequate warranty. Finally, price and warranty are obviously going to factor into your decision. As mentioned before, electric comb binders aren't cheap. Even so, choosing the cheapest product can be an unwise move, especially if the warranty isn't great. Warranties can last as long as two years, but some are much shorter, and if your product fails, you might need to put out a lot of money for repairs or even a replacement if the warranty is over. So make sure to choose a device that's well-made, fits within your budget, and will be protected for a good amount of time.

Finally, choose a product from a well-known manufacturer such as Renz, Akiles, Rhin-O-Tuff, GBC, Tamerica, or Fellowes. Their products are fantastic and you really get what you pay for.

Electric comb binding machines are a good way to create your own books in-house. Now that you know what five features you should look for, get one of these devices for your business today.
