Five Keystones of New York City

Five Keystones of New York City

Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island are the five keystones of New York City. Each keystone contains its own distinguished neighborhoods, each with their own definable character and history.

Queens is the most ethnically diverse and the largest geographically. It is the 10th most populous county in the United States. The population of 2.3 million in Queens makes it the second most populous of the five boroughs in New York City. If each borough would be declared an independent city, Brooklyn, which is larger than Queens, would be the third largest in United States.

Queens would then be the fourth largest city in the United States. Located on Long Island's western portion, it is also home to two major New York airports, LaGuardia Airport and JFK International Airport. The New York Mets, the famous baseball team is in Queens and host the US Open Tennis Tournament. Staten Island truly is an island in the city and connected to Brooklyn by the historic landmark, Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and to Manhattan; the Staten Island Ferry connects it.

The Staten Island Ferry is rated as one of the biggest tourist attractions and is a unique part of the city. Staten Island is located southwest of the city with a 491, 730, making it the least populated of the five, but it has the third largest in area. Overall Staten Island is the most suburban between the five boroughs of New York City. The South Shore in Staten Island has the F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is two and a half miles long, making it the fourth longest in the world.

Brooklyn with its 2.5 million residents is the most populous in New York City, as well s the second largest in area. Until its consolidation with New York City, Brooklyn was an independent city. Brooklyn has its own unique cultural heritage, architectural heritage and culture, as well as its distinct culture where neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves for specific cultures and ethnic groups.

Manhattan is one of the five keystones of New York City, primarily on Manhattan Island and the mouth of the Hudson River. Manhattan is geographically the smallest of the five keystones, but also the most urbanized of the five. Manhattan has world famous landmarks, museums, universities, and tourist attraction and the center of New York City. It is home to the New York Stock Exchange, apart from other major commercial, financial and cultural centers that is important and recognized throughout the world. In population, Manhattan is the third largest of the five keystones of New York City.

Bronx is the northernmost of the five keystones of New York City and is the only borough located mainly on the mainland. The Bronx is the fourth largest in land area and the forth most populated of the five. The Bronx River divides the Bronx into a hilly part on the west closer to Manhattan and flatter to the east toward Long Island. Even though the Bronx is the third most in densely population in the U.S., quarter of it is open space. Of the five keystones of New York City, the Bronx is one of the five poorest Congressional Districts in the United States.
